I know it is very early, but how many football signees can we take on for 2011? Also, how many would be considered a good number of signees at our critical needs (D.T. and O.L.) positions, and what is realistic? Would like to hear thoughts on both best case and worst case scenarios.

OL and LB in my opinion. I don't think we are in good position with a lot of the top talent, but you gotta expect these guys to look past us with all the things we've gone through in the last several months. Positive note is Dooley went and got Rogers and Neal. I think he has already proven he is a great recruiter. What worries me, I see us in competition with ACC schools for average recruits that we can't win in the SEC with. 20 out of 21 (just throwing out numbers) players we are in competition with Bama of UF is going to sign with them and not us.

I feel like we are in better shape at LB than most people believe. There arent any Al Wilson's running around but they will be solid. My concern is that there seems to be a lack of elite DT's in the class. I also feel like we need a minimum of 2-3 ELITE OL out of this class.

I see you have found the New Thread button :)
Good thread though. Imo, you can never have too many DT, OL, LB, or RB. So I think we try to take 2-3 DT's to build some depth and maybe 3 or even 4 LB. If we can just get that one stud MLB that teams fear playing against, I think it will go a long way for us.

You are certainly right, i am just curious if it is realistic that next spring some of our concerns along the line especially are not so critical

Just like last year, we will only be able to sign 28 with a max number of scholly's at 85. We can bring in JUCO's or transfers and give them the scholarships of departed players. We definitely need some top rated OL and DT. A couple of LB's is also critical. UT could use 1 safety, 2 or 3 corners, 1 RB, 1 top tier WR, and 2 TE's. Sign several big guys next year and UT will be fine.

At a minimum UT needs to sign 6 OL, 4 LB, 4 DT, 2 DE, 3 DB, 2 TE, 1 QB, 1 RB

Then with the other 5 spots you can fill them out with athletes, WR, FB, etc...

How realistic do you think it is that we get those numbers, or at least close to them?

It's looking like 26 is the max # of new players we can bring onto campus for the '11 season. But we can sign more than that. Auburn and LSU proved that this year when they signed 32 (lol) and 29.

QB- 1
RB- 1
TE- 2
WR- 2
OL- 5
DE- 3
DT- 4
LB- 4
CB- 2
S- 2

his numbers are very realistic. we are going to load up on DT, LB, and OL. no less that 13 players from those 3 positions.

and you can bank on signing at least 2 TEs, 1 QB, and 1 RB.

The way Dooley talks, seems like we're going to be going away from the FB position. Also, if he really does love his TEs like he says, I think we'll sign three.

+1

The more I've thought about it, the more I like the flexibility of the tight end. Especially if we're lucky enough to get one with the talent to pull the H-back after motioning to the backfield.

Fugate could plays some H-Back.

This next class is really going to set the stage for the Dooley era.

But have no doubt that this class will be filled with DT, OL and LBs. It might not rank high, but it will bring in what UT needs to establish a foundation.

our incoming JUCO CB Dave Clark is the same way. he was in JUCO for 2 years but got hurt, and redshirted one of those years. he has 3 years to play 3 too.

Bama and UF can only sign about 50 players. If they are our only competition then we will be fine. Seriously, if we can just out-recruit UGA in Georgia, then I think we will be fine. I don't know why you think Dooley will only recruit ACC level players when he went out and got a 5-star and 3 or 4 four-star recruits in the last 10 days of the recruiting season last year.

We will only really know what Dooley can do on signing day next year, but his track records says that he knows how to get the best. Until he disappoints, I see no reason to doubt his ability.

I think the rank will be fine. One of our fellow posters said that we're in on a bunch of ESPN150 guys. I don't think they want scrubs. Remember, Dooley recruited for LSU's nat. championship team.

I think we'll bring in some JUCO's. Maybe some of the ones that we kind of wanted to be with us in '10, but needed to better grades before entrance, a la that OL from TX I can't remember his name.

Hubbs said a week or 2 ago that Dooley has turned down some commits tifwiw.
