Ben Smith's Blog: Koch backs Obama, calls Palin 'scary' - Politico.com

Former New York Mayor Ed Koch's big issue is terrorism. He endorsed Bush in '04. He even narrated a counter-movie in '04 against Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. But Palin pushed him over the edge.

"I have concluded that the country is safer in the hands of Barack Obama, leader of the Democratic Party and protector of the philosophy of that party. Protecting and defending the U.S. means more than defending us from foreign attacks. It includes defending the public with respect to their civil rights, civil liberties and other needs, e.g., national health insurance, the right of abortion, the continuation of Social Security, gay rights, other rights of privacy, fair progressive taxation and a host of other needs and rights.
"If the vice president were ever called on to lead the country, there is no question in my mind that the experience and demonstrated judgment of Joe Biden is superior to that of Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin is a plucky, exciting candidate, but when her record is examined, she fails miserably with respect to her views on the domestic issues that are so important to the people of the U.S., and to me. Frankly, it would scare me if she were to succeed John McCain in the presidency."

Ed Koch is officially no longer a moron.

Yes, her agreement with the founding fathers of this country is detestable. I really hate that in a candidate.

It's interesting how the dynamic has changed with intro of Palin. Suddenly stupid endorsements from someone like Ed Koch could be a big deal.

McCain has been gaining in statewide polls everywhere since the convention -- except Florida. Biden is very popular in Florida, and Jewish voters are not enamored with Palin for obvious reasons. Ed Koch's endorsement could have just enough of an impact in certain counties to tip the balance.

I never would've thought Florida would play a pivotal role this year, but it's looking like it will. Of course, the electoral map today has both Florida and Ohio going to McCain -- and he still loses 273-265.

you guys don't seem to care that Obama is a socialist, which is far more prevalent and dangerous political ideology than a fringe secessionist (note spelling) group in Alaska.

I read a thesis a while back that did a good job of evaluating political ideologies. Socialism does tend to work for smaller countries on the scale of small islands or population centers. However, free market works better for larger bodies on the scale of 5,000 (?) or more. Since there are few population centers of the smaller size around the world its hard to get a legitimate take on it. The problem boils down to socialism doesn't work on a grand scale, free market does, since it requires labor to police itself.

(?) is there because I cannot remember the exact number but it was tiny.
