O-Line notes from today's tfpOnline...

Fulmer moved redshirt freshman center Josh McNeil ahead of junior starter Michael Frogg on Monday.

McNeil is set to make his first career start Saturday at Memphis.

"Now he’s got to show the maturity and the toughness — toughness is not a problem with him, (so) mostly maturity and consistency to see if he can do this," Fulmer said, "and I think he can."

A former USA Today prep second-team All-American, McNeil was in position to open the season as the starter. But during a preseason scrimmage, he fired a shotgun snap over quarterback Erik Ainge’s head.

Frogg, a former walk-on, was named starter soon after the miscue.

"Those two will still share time," Fulmer said, "but hopefully, we’ll continue to solidify that to where one guy is playing most of the time as we go along."

And on Jacques...
Fulmer praised former Baylor School offensive lineman Jacques McClendon for his performance against Marshall, an indication his playing time could increase soon.

If the mental part of their game is ready, then the Line play gets better with more reps from these two....

Come on guys.... show me.

I am glad to see that changes are being made and these young player are getting their shots. They cannot do much worse than some of the performances we have seen.

i gotta say i am worried about rotating centers. i hope ainge doesnt have any problems handling the snaps. i know we need help on the line but changing centers could create problems. i hope i am wrong.

Didn't the Oline really handle Cal? I don't remember Ainge running for his life in that game. What happened? I know Cal's D wasn't that bad. Where did that Oline go?

They kept Cal out of our backfield, but didn't really blow anybody off the ball. We had a lot of 2 and 3 yard runs.

After looking at the stats, I think it might have been a couple of things inflating the rushing numbers a bit. We had a long run made out of nothing that skewed the stats. Also, our defense gave us the ball back more often and a little quicker. We had 14 posessions in that game, which is a little more than we are getting I think. Cutty was saying its become more of a 11-12 possession game.

If memory serves, didn't we also have soom reverse yardage in there?

I'm not going to die on this mountain, but there were perhaps a couple of contributing factors that inflated the raw rushing yardage that might not be attributed to excellent line play.

In the Cal game, the pass protection was good, the rush blocking was average.

Possessions thus far for the Tennessee offense:

Cal 14
Air 7
Fla 11

Yeah, we had more possessions simply because Ainge and the receivers were scoring quickly. Well, that and Cal's lack of offense.

Good point. Our offense definitely scored quickly which reduced the TOP/drive.

After looking, though, I couldn't believe we only had 7 possessions against Air Force! That's less than 2 per qtr, which is mindboggling to think about.:dunno:

I hope the defense is working on causing turnovers. They have to start getting the offense back on the field. If you only have 7-10 possessions a game, one or two of your own turnovers could kill you.

Yep, AF did a great job at running their offense and burning time. We would have beat them soundly if our defense could've managed a few more stops. We probably should've beat them soundly anyway.

Almost every drive was a long one in that game, for both teams. Pretty much the exact opposite of the Cal game.

Yeah, if our defense could have mustered a few more stops giving our offense 10 or 11 possessions, the Vols probably would've hung somewhere around 70 points on them. Not that Fulmer would ever actually hang 70 on anyone, but it would have been possible.

That's true. Scored on every drive accept the one with the INT didn't they?

Well, and the one after finally recovering an onside kick to drain the clock.
