The lyrics recall the bumbling efforts of one Erma Rees-Gwynn, a divorcee and aspiring contractor, to build a three-story deck--with a stairway leading up from the garden--at the rear of a castle that guitarist Jimmy Page owned in Wales. Presumably meant satirically, but one never knows.

Anyone know the meaning behind the 80's song "Turning Japanese"? (Vapors).

Hint: it's been mentioned already in this thread.

The idea is that when the male is "in the act", his face takes on an "asian" look with the eyes and mouth - think about it

In general I think it's about the loss of innocense after the 50s and 60s as people joined protests and rallied against the governement in the late 60s and early 70s reacting to Vietnam.

Maybe. The people did what needed to be done, though.

Either way, we got left with some great music. McLain, CCR, later-period Beatles, just all around good stuff.

I had heard it many times. It was confirmed on a Vh-1 retrospective of the 80's

My old music history teacher in college (very bright man by the way) always talked about how the Beatles changed music forever. And this was in a classical music class...

I tend to agree with him..

They did. They had a great Beatles exhibit last time I visited the Experience Music Project in Seattle. Great place.

Wasn't it Waylon Jennings who gave up his seat on the plane?

I was thinking it was Willie Nelson. He was a popular songwriter at the time. Not yet known as a recording artist.

I agree with te assesment of the Beatles. They also changed more than music. Along with a few other artists, they changed the way people viewed musical instruments. For some reason, every kid decided he could play the guitar like Jon, Paul or George, saved his dimes and bought a Sivertone or Fender or whatever he could find.

Here is one to think about:

"Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" by Iron Maiden. I was told it was about Jimi Hendrix, but I don't get that out of the song.
