Meaningless Bowl Games

For all of the people bemoaning the bowl system and players opting out, it sure as hell looked like this weekend's games meant something to the players and coaches. I don't remember a better New Year's slate of games.
If people can’t see that they are blind. Too the great many players that go to class and care about their team and the game. I salute a great round of games Thursday-Monday was some great action. GBO

I have never understood why some say bowl games only matter to fans. That’s demonstrably false. They mean a lot to the coaches, fans, recruits and their families and most important the players.

It's the games in the middle that mean so little. For the teams witha lot to win, it matters. Small programs, it matters. The middle? Meh.

Worse is when it matters to one team and the other doesn't give a rats azz. That's been UF the last two years. No one cares to be there.

If that is how the majority of the team feels about the bowl matchup, they should seriously opt out and let the alternate team go in their place. For instance, I am not a fan of the Music City Bowl and wouldn't fault any team for wanting to just skip it.

They didn't try to hide it, eh?

The games were exciting, at the few I watched. By now, many o you know I don't hold it against opt-outs, and even advocate them to a degree. On the other side, I see the, uh..., opt-ins as benefiting on multiple levels. That is players who bowl because they want to. Bench sitters get a chance to play when positions are vacated by opt-outs. So too do second and third stringers who saw minimal PT during the season. There's the excitement of getting to travel, practically VIP style, to places they otherwise wouldn't see. Not to forget the party atmosphere bowl invites create. Even meet and play teams, usually outside their usual venue. Perhaps, finally, for those who know they don't have a NFL future to enjoy the game they love, one more time. Or just enjoy extra play while they got it before their CFB career eventually ends. A salute to them all. And may the ones who opt-out to protect a secure financial future, know only success, and have sense enough to not be stupid and end up ruining their lives. A pity, we have fans who refuse to understand and respect that.

Well said. Preseason everyone talks about the team goals and what we as fans HOPE for. Certainly the playoffs, but HOW many times did we hear about making a NY6 bowl game. Would anyone have thought that, after making it to that game, we would be hearing comments about the game’s insignificance or just an exhibition? If we had been told in August we would be 10-2 and playing in the orange bowl without our best receiver because he was “sitting out” - I wonder what our thoughts would have been? It’s a different era obviously and we have to get used to it I suppose. And if it’s just an exhibition, why are we so excited with the win ? Just my thoughts to go along with your good post.

You don't understand the term. No one is saying the games are completely meaningless. The extra practice, more experience, money, fans, among other things. It's that the game is meaningless for NFL draft board players. They stand nothing to gain but a huge risk by playing. You say it looked like it meant something to the players but I didn't see Hyatt or Tillman so it didn't mean anything to them.

I can see why players opt out given the potential risk to their financial future, and I’m okay with that. However, no true competitor that sets foot on the field is ever going to think the game is meaningless.

Q. Coach, what do you say to people who insist still that bowl games don't matter, and what was the significance of the win tonight?

JOSH HEUPEL: Man, bowl games matter. You watch them every single day, you can see the energy, effort, strain, the excitement, the disappointment on the other side. They matter. It doesn't mean that everybody has everybody for the ballgame. That's just the nature of where we're at during the course of bowl season. But it matters for everybody that shows up. It matters to the head coaches, the assistants. It matters to the fans. It matters to the players. These guys are prideful. Clemson is prideful. When you line up and compete, man, you're going to compete with everything that you've got. These are rare opportunities. 21 years ago, whatever it was, I got an opportunity to play here inside of this stadium, and the memories that I have from that, I don't talk about my playing days a lot with these guys. I'm old enough that some of them weren't even alive, but I think they bought into that, that these moments matter, and it's something that they will remember for the rest of their lives.
