buffoonery at it's finest

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/09/world/asia/incentive-to-slow-climate-change-drives-output-of-harmful-gases.html?_r=1

RANJIT NAGAR, India — When the United Nations wanted to help slow climate change, it established what seemed a sensible system.

Greenhouse gases were rated based on their power to warm the atmosphere. The more dangerous the gas, the more that manufacturers in developing nations would be compensated as they reduced their emissions.

But where the United Nations envisioned environmental reform, some manufacturers of gases used in air-conditioning and refrigeration saw a lucrative business opportunity.

They quickly figured out that they could earn one carbon credit by eliminating one ton of carbon dioxide, but could earn more than 11,000 credits by simply destroying a ton of an obscure waste gas normally released in the manufacturing of a widely used coolant gas. That is because that byproduct has a huge global warming effect. The credits could be sold on international markets, earning tens of millions of dollars a year.

That incentive has driven plants in the developing world not only to increase production of the coolant gas but also to keep it high — a huge problem because the coolant itself contributes to global warming and depletes the ozone layer. That coolant gas is being phased out under a global treaty, but the effort has been a struggle.

Speaking of the U.N.

Genocidal Sudanese regime's appointment to UN human rights council all but certain, watchdog says | Fox News

The election of a Sudanese warlord accused of genocide to the United Nations Human Rights Council is now virtually guaranteed, since he has the full backing of the world body's African delegation.

The International Criminal Court has issued a warrant for Omar Al-Bashir -- its first ever for a sitting head of state -- for crimes against humanity he allegedly committed in Darfur. Yet, his regime is set to take its place on the panel, in the latest bizarre appointment to make a mockery of the UN's human rights credibility, according to critics.

It's like putting “Jack the Ripper in charge of a women’s shelter,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of UN Watch.

Why are we still part of the U.N?

If we leave the UN, do we just take back the designated section of New York City and tell them to leave? Serious question.

I'm not sure we have to but I don't think that option would be off the table.

In reality, if the U.S. pulls out, the U.N. will collapse within a couple years.

kill two birds with one stone, move the UN to Haiti, it's out of our hair and the economy of Haiti will improve significantly

Wouldnt hurt my feelings one bit if we pulled out of the UN. Being a part of NATO is way more meaningful to me than being part of the UN.

Yeah, NATO>>>>>U.N.

Only downfall is that Model U.N. would be worthless in high school. Anybody else do Model U.N.?

I would love to hear anyone throw out some reasons. It has become a joke of an organization

Becoming would imply this worthless bureaucracy was ever legitimate and I emphatically believe that answer to be a fat no.

This should have been an exclusive club of only western democracies don't care how socialist or capitalist you are. But when you let Tyrants not only into the table but actually in leadership positions. You are a joke. And your corrupt forces from all of your endless "organizations" that have only one purpose, and that is to encourage your expanding control, and your "peacekeeping" forces that do more raping and pillaging than the ones you are protecting the innocent from. Ya a lot less UN would do this world a TON of good.

My father in law recently went on a mission trip to Haiti (funny someone brought that up) and the people down there literally can't afford to wear shoes (let alone clothes) sitting on a gold mine of opportunity that will never see the light of day thanks to their grossly idiotic government. And here is the UN driving through in their brand new trucks for a photo OP. Didn't stay but long enough to snap a few pictures of the idiot general and leave. Did they bring anything for the people in need? Nope. Disgusting.

I am almost afraid to ask that that is exactly?

Exactly as it sounds, a model U.N. or mock U.N. High schools from across the county or state compete against each other in a mock U.N convention. Each school is assigned a country they will represent and research the sh*t out of that country to further their country as much as possible at the convention. It is judged accordingly.

Wow something the UN is actually useful for (albeit indirectly). All I had in high school was a mock trial which was still pretty cool.
