Anybody else notice that they gave Mel Kiper Junior a pumpkin pie with 40 on it today?

Is he retiring?

Say what you will about Mel’s takes, but the guy literally created his job. That’s pretty cool, no matter how high he was on Jimmy Clausen!

He finally got away from that 1970s hairstyle LOL...

Have you ever heard him tell his story about the early years. He was set to be part of the GM staff at Baltimore (I think) having been hired just after the end of the season. Some big changes took place in the off season and the GM who hired him called and told him not to come to work because the GM realized he was going to be fired and he told Kiper that Kiper would be fired as well in the inevitable house cleaning.

Kiper's annual NCAA evaluations were starting to take off, so he went with that, over time. I actually remember seeing the first draft. It was in one of the smaller concert theaters in MSG. The only fans were from NYC and Philly. They were raucous and loud. Each team would have 2 reps at a table with a phone. They would actually be talking to their GM and would write the pick on a card that was run up to the Commish. It was aill so minimal. And yet, it was a great show compared to the staged crap today.

If you want to see a great clip, it's from 1994, Mel goes off on the Colts after the move from Baltimore, so no love lost there. After they had made an aggressive move up, Mel said he doubted the team even understood the way you should use the draft. The response from the team's GM was classic and made Mel a superstar.

Here is an article about with the video.

I watched the clips from the 94 draft the other day. They were hilarious. Kiper was right and wrong I guess. Didn’t the Colts make the AFC Title in 94 or 95? They also finally got it right with Peyton in the 98 draft.

Was nice of Levis’s agent to buy Mel a pie
Is this the same Mel Kiper who said Will Levis would be picked in the top 4 picks? Almost as bad as Hasselback saying the Texans " used" Will Levis ( kept saying it over and over--that they used him ) in the process of their eventual pick of Stroud. These pundits orbit in their own universe sometimes.

To be fair, it has been shared publicly that if QBs had gone with all three of the first picks, Indy would have taken Levis at 4. Kiper and McShay just go based off of waht they're told from inside sources. What they can't know is when they're being used to spin a narrative.

It's a huge miss to predict someone being in the top 4 picks to them not even getting picked in the 1st round. He didn't just miss by a little bit. Kiper should take up watching college football games ....like the Tenn/Kentucky game. They pumped Levis up all week and it was kinda sad watching him get stood up on prom night.

I'm no fan of Kiper, but he was far from the only "guru" riding the Will Levis hype train. Lot of people were hanging on that jock. No idea why, but it was far more than just Kiper.
