Memphis’ highly touted incoming freshman class, ranked second behind only Kentucky, could take a major hit with the uncertainty involving the eligibility of talented wing Will Barton.

According to a source close to the situation, the 6-foot-6 Barton – a Baltimore native who is considered one of the top players in the country – hasn't been cleared due to academic concerns dating back to high school.

Whoops! Browser Settings Incompatible

Big loss for Memphis if this kid is not cleared. Memphis beat writer indicated sources are saying that the issues is that he did not graduate in 8 semesters. Apparently a rule that has changed in the past few years.

Hmmm. I was just watching some videos of him last night. He's a player.

Yeah, he has been playing in the Bluff City Basketball League this summer. It's kind of like the Pilot Rocky Top, except this year it had several current and former NBA players. Compared to the Pilot, it was considerably stronger. Anyway, the kid was by all accounts tearing it up and one former NBA guy even said this kid was/is a 1 and done talent.

Rumors are flying that the kid may have been advised to delay graduation by 2 months to preserve McDonald's AA game eligibility. That 2 months is supposedly what is costing him at this moment.

The morons that are advising these young athletes and hurting their careers or education need to face criminal charges.

I feel bad for Barton. As for Memphis.. Not so much. I bet he'd have been cleared under Calipari.

Why would you feel bad? Part of this is due to his grades. Besides, he can go get paid in Europe and still be in the NBA draft next year. Dude is going to get paid regardless.

Well, I mainly feel bad for him if he was advised to delay graduation and that is what caused him to be ineligible. As a previous poster said, that is borderline criminal.

Yea, Will was really looking forward to playing with the Tigers this year. While it is hard to feel bad for someone who will make more in one year than I will in my lifetime, I do kind of.

Get ready for the NCAA double standard when it comes to Memphis.

Selby (Barton's cousin who attended the same school) has similar ineligibility issues and is committed to KU. Selby made numerous UNOFFICIAL visits while his mother was unemployed.

Kantner played PROFESSIONAL basketball overseas and is committed to UK.

Somehow, both of these players will be cleared in 2 weeks while Memphis has to wait months for an upheld ineligibility ruling.

Memphis fans who think there is a 'AA conspiracy against them are about as foolish as UT fans who think ESPN has a conspiracy against them.

You guys need to live with the fact that your program got caught and you have to deal with the consequences.

Actually, the issues are not similar between Barton and Selby. One is academic (Barton) and the other is amateurism (Selby).

Quit ruining all of the good conspiracy theories!

How exactly did Memphis cheat when it played a player that had been cleared by the NCAA Clearinghouse not once, but twice?

The NCAA itself stated in its ruling that the coach at the time did not, and could not, have known about the SAT test in question because it was prior to the player enrolling in school. The NCAA has still yet to PROVE that Derrick Rose DID NOT take his own test.

How is a family member reimbursing the school for a charter flight any different from a player taking money to attend a camp, and then repaying it, and becoming eligible? As in any number of cases that frequently occur.

Classy kid owns up to his situation.

“I got it together my 11th and 12th year, my prep year, but not taking care of business early in life, you can’t blame anyone but yourself,” Barton said. “If you have dreams of going to college and playing basketball, you need to think about it early. And that’s my fault. I was the one going to school. I should have been doing my work.”

If you seriously believe that Cal had no knowledge of the whole Rose situation or that Rose actually took that test, then I hope you will do us all a favor and not reproduce for fear of of expanding your gene pool.

I think most Memphis fans (CALISKING might not be part of this crowd) will say that Cal knew (and likely setup) Rose's test in Detroit. However, the NCAA DID clear him twice to play. On one hand, you can't be that mad when your coach knowingly cheated, on the other hand the NCAA said go ahead and play him, twice.

Regardless, Barton seems to be a good kid with borderline academics that got clipped by 2 months and bad advice from the adults around him.

Do you have proof that Rose did not take the test? You must have been in the room.

That is huge news for the Tigers.

Now two deep at every position. Folks in Mempho are pretty stoked about the upcoming season.

While the team is dominated by freshmen, 4 of these freshmen won an AAU National Title together last year.

Could be another banner year. Of course, 2 years later, the NCAA will decide that Barton was ineligible after they ruled him eligible.

Tennessee will roll Memphis. Pastner isn't Calipari and Tennessee's upperclassmen will handle their freshman. *high five*
