"If a player is good enough to play at the University of Memphis and play at the highest level, I want him to be here. There's no reason for him to leave."

That part kills me! You mean if your good enough to play in the BS conference usa, you will automatically advance to the tournament every year only to come up short because your not prepared to play against the best because you have not played anyone all year?

Yeah, because Memphis has had such trouble advancing in the NCAA Tournament. Look at all the Elite Eights and Final Fours Tennessee has played in as a result of their rigorous "preparation" received in SEC play.

Memphis area players skip UT elite basketball camp for Memphis : Men's Basketball : GoVolsXtra.com

I realize the loyality Memphis kids have towards the city's university, but it's a bid sad that a brand new coach can attract all these Memphis guys over all that we offer.

If Pearl cannot eventually create a pipeline to Memphis, I'm unsure he will be able to build a program capable of advancing past the Sweet 16.
How many of Memphis' elite players are actually from Memphis?

Pearl's downfall...the inability to get anyone out of memphis.

It's tough to get any top prospect to travel 400 miles to play for a historically mediocre program when there is a top program in their own backyard who has recently played for a national championship (although it was done with at least one player who should have been ineligible).

I like Pearl as much as anybody, but until we can at least break through that Sweet 16 barrier, we can't expect to win too many recruiting battles with U of M for elite prospects in Memphis.

Memphis St gets by without a team of players from Memphis so why would that kill UT? There are much bigger issues

Two players from Memphis on UM's team from last year:

Pierre Niles and Preston Laird.

How will we live without such talent?

Maybe if you used the correct name, people would know what you are talking about. It's not Memphis "State" anymore.

Memphis can draw nationally because of success. We haven't had that so we need to atleast be able to lock down our home state.

Getting some of the best talent out of Memphis would help but as pj pointed out Memphis has had better success with recruiting the best from elsewhere, this is what has driven their success in the NCAA's......the local kids had much less to do with it.

You are correct, Memphis High would have been much better.

As time goes on you will get used to and understand when people are taking good humored jabs.

The vast majority of the inner city kids from Memphis will fail to qualify anyway. A prep writer in Memphis told me recently that he had covered at least 2 dozen kids a year in Memphis that could play either D1 Football or Basketball, but that most of them failed to get any offers because the coaches found out from the jump that the kd had no shot of qualifying.
