If Pastner were the Boy Wonder head coach that people are making him out to be, he'd be getting more out of what he has. I realize they don't have an elite roster, but they should have enough to win CUSA. By a quick count, they have the same number of 4-5* players as Tennessee right now (6). I know that stars aren't everything, but it's a quick way to gauge the overall talent level of a team. Six 4* players should easily be the best team in CUSA.
It looks like UK has 10 4-5* players.
Realistically, what more do you expect? 32 year old coach who gets a gutted program. In his first few months on the job he has to keep a team in place, assemble a staff, finish a schedule, and recruit.
This team is a missed 3 from having a win over #1 Kansas and a couple of bounces from wins over UT, UTEP, and UMass. Syracuse is the only team to dominate the Tigers this year. SMU was a bad loss because of poor shooting. I'd call that a testament to Pastner's abilities of getting the most out of this bunch, not a weakness.
Memphis has 3 players, period. Williams, Witherspoon, and Mack. The rest were marginal role players on previous years teams. If Coleman was so great, he would be at UK right now, not Memphis. He is a project. Recruiting star ratings are irrelevant after the first year. That's when you see who can play and who can't.
Believe it or not, there are some pretty good teams in CUSA. UTEP and UAB can play with anyone in the country.
It is realistic to think that this year's Tigers should COMPETE for the CUSA title. To think they should dominate as in previous years is simply unrealistic.
