we all know memphis provides good recruits every year, and usually a great one ever year or so. with cal gone to uk and memphis seemingly taking a step back what effect will it have. does cal keep snagging all those players? or does bruce now become king of recruuiting mephis, as he is the only tennessee team worth going to, and he now appears loyal to ut, or moreso tha cal. without cal at memphis, imo i believe pearl starts making memphis a recruiting hot bed. the first big player to prove whether or not this is true will probably be joe jackson. he was in between ut and memphis, and he is right out of memphis so we will see wha happens, but if ut can land him and become the favorite for memphis grown players then that would be huge.

I hadn't even started to think about the idea of this. I hope this may actually help attract more talent from the Memphis area.

If he's going to make himself the king of recruiting in Memphis, he better hurry up. I'm sure Andy Kennedy (Ole Miss), Rick Stansberry (Miss St), and John Pelphrey (Arkansas) are going to be trying to get in the door, also.

Actually, Cal's recruiting really wasn't focused on Memphis. Sure he recruited good players there, like E. Williams, but he was a national recruiter. More specifically, he has very close ties to a dude called Worldwide Wes. I heard his ties to this guy were one of the reasons UK didn't call him two years ago. Cal will continue to get the same players through these guys, and we will continue to compete with Kennedy, Anderson, Stansberry, et al for West Tennessee talent.

What about Memphis and Kentucky recruits for this year?
I have heard Cousins will probably follow Cal, but Henry will not. If Cal brings on 2 or 3 new recruits, will any Kentucky recruits go elsewhere?

I've heard that Cousins might not be able to get in to a SEC school. And reports are that Cal has already run off 2 or 3 of the KY recruits, not sure if they are this year or years coming.

There was talk that Cal would recruit Memphis players even if he wasn't going to sign them just to steer them away from UT. I doubt he'll still have that influence.

I wouldn't worry so much about The University of Memphis getting the recruits. Lately, the top recruits have gone to Duke, UNC, Ole Miss...

If Cousins can get in to UK, I believe that is where he will end up. I think Henry goes to Kansas. I have also heard that 3 of UK's recrutis have backed out of their commits, now whether that was forced on them or not, I have not heard.

Will Coleman evidently likes the UT staff so there might be a chance there (not sure of available schollys at UT). His game has been described as Joey Dorsey-like.

As for Joe Jackson, it is my understanding that he has always wanted to be a Tiger, but obviously a large part of it will be who the next coach is. He said yesterday that he hoped it would be Bruce, so he obviously likes Bruce in some capacity.

Like Mattlock said though, I think Bruce will have to fight off OM, MSU, UA, Duke, UNC and others for the talent.

I think this is a good opportunity for Pearl....whether or not he takes advantage of it remains to be seen. He needs to mend some fences down there to have any success. If I'm not mistaken, it has been said we only have two scholly's to give this year. Goins got one, not sure about the other.

There has NOT been a heck of a lot of work to make end roads here in West Tn. I have lived here 61 years and you can pretty much count on one hand the players who have attended UT from this are. IMHO, that is sad. Believe it or not we do play all kinds of sports down here.

NIles and Laird from Memphis.

Kemp from Bolivar.

"Kings of Memphis" last 2 years have been in order:

Duke - E. Williams
UNC - McDonald.
Mizzou - Bowers.

Knoxville is so far away from Memphis considering they're in the same state and the two areas couldn't be any more different.

Ah, but I thought Worldwide Wes absolutely, positively wasn't going to be involved in Cal's recruiting at UK? (wink, nudge, etc.)
