What are your thoughts on people who cheer for Tennessee in football and Memphis in basketball? I personally find it sick. If you grew up a fan of one and attended the other, I could see it. If you have parents who went to one and you attended the other, I could also see it. If that were the case, I personally wouldn't cheer for Memphis if I went to school there. I would never be a fan of Memphis. I don't think you have to be a fan of a school just because you go there/went there. You go there to get an education, not to be a fan of their teams.

So, what do you think of the fans who cheer for both schools? I can't help find it wrong since they are rivals. Not to mention, it seems kind of bandwagonish. I won't even go into my dislike for people that cheer for a school that has one of the best football teams in the country and another school that has one of the best basketball teams. That's just flat out bandwagon.

I know it shouldn't bother me but as a true fan, it kind of does. I only cheer for one team in every sport and stick by them through the good and bad. I've endured really bad seasons. Actually, UT football is the only team I cheer for that has won a championship. Maybe that's why I dislike bandwagon fans so much. Like I said, I kind of view cheering for Tennessee football and Memphis basketball as bandwagonish. It seems those people don't want to cheer for Memphis football because they suck or they don't want to cheer for Tennessee basketball because they haven't that great until recent and haven't made it past the Sweet 16.

Anyways..... That was longer than it should have been. I could have just left it at what do you think about people who cheer for Tennessee in football and Memphis in basketball?

I don't cheer for the University of Memphis in any capacity but I don't mind it when they do well.

Many fans of teams did not go to the particular schools in which they. If they went to college at all. Living in Memphis, cheering for Memphis basketball and Tennessee football is pretty common.

Memphis cannot financially support football the way they do basketball.

Basketball is KING in Memphis.

But when the football team infinitely sucks with no hope for redemption...what can you do?

Find another team. Why bash them when they recognize a good thing?

It annoys the hell out of me. One of my friends attends the University of Memphis. Of course, he roots for Memphis in basketball and Tennessee in football. Whenever I confront him about the blatant stupidity of this stance, he just shrugs his shoulders. Perhaps now, with recent developments within Memphis' basketball program, he will defect to Tennessee in said sport as well.

well, if it annoys you then yor about to get rubbed....

I grew up in east tn watching the vols as a kid, football ruled...basketball was a joke where I grew up. when I got to high school we moved to Memphis, eventually I got my degree from the UoM...lI support the tigers on the hardwood and like to see the vols do well, but when the play each other in bb I am all tiger. I take the exact opposite stance on football. if it pisses you of that much I think you need to address your priorities in life.

It feels like anger management might help you my friend . Who are you to judge who anyone pulls for .

I'm just saying that anyone who roots for one school's team in one sport and another school's team in another sport is a true fan of neither team.

So how do you feel about someone who is a fan of multiple schools on an equal level in all sports? I'd imagine somebody like me must really bother you.

Well here is a twist. I am a citizen of the sate of Tennessee. I pull for all the in state schools except when they play Memphis! Now, if a win in football will help the Vols win the national championship, then it would not bother me if they beat Memphis.

If Memphis was in the SEC and got the revenues that UTK get by being in a BCS conference, they would put a quality team on the field every year too! Memphis does not need the SEC to recruit in basketball.

Memphis needs support from the administration as much as it needs BCS money when it comes to the football program.

The existence of fans like that is Exhibit A in why it just means a lot more when you're an alumnus of the school. Those guys are rooting for an arbitrary set of laundry, like you'd pick a pro team. I'm rooting for part of my identity.

I'm not saying that guys who didn't go to school at UT aren't "true fans" or anything, whatever that means, but I don't think there's any question that having been through school there (twice!) makes it a lot more personal than any other sports allegiance I can ever imagine having.

I have never attended the University of Tennessee, but I couldn't imagine rooting for any team other than the Vols, regardless of the sport in question.

I'm an enormous Braves fan. Been rooting for them for almost all of my 39 years; I can't imagine rooting for any baseball team other than them. But I didn't spend four years of my life at Braves University, and I didn't meet my wife at Turner Field, and I didn't walk back and forth by the stadium every day during the most important years of my life, and I didn't get drunk in the bars near the stadium and pass out in the nearby hotels every week. The Braves didn't take me in as a boy and spit me out four years later as a man. UTK did.

My point is that sports allegiances are inherently arbitrary -- except when you're cheering for your school. Much as I want them to win, rooting for the Braves or the Falcons is just rooting for a team. Cheering for the University of Tennessee is cheering for my team, my youth, everything. It's not just Go Local Sports Team; it means more.

The original poster asked for our thoughts about guys who cheer for UT in one sport and another school in others. My immediate reaction is that it makes me grateful that I get to just root for my alma mater in everything.

Although I have never attended UTK, I was born and raised in the state of Tennessee. To me, the University of Tennessee athletic teams represent the entire state of Tennessee, not necessarily the university alone. Hence, I feel a connection to the university and its athletic teams. And trust me, I would love nothing more than to be able to go to the University of Tennessee.

Just my two cents.

I'd wager that most of the Memphis basketball/UT football fans are from the Memphis area who attend(ed) UT. I have numerous friends who grew up with me in the 80s who are grads of UT. My daughter and her friends are current UT students who pull for the Tigers in basketball. It's not bandwagon, it's called growing up in a basketball town, being a fan since you were 5-10 years old, and witnessing Final Four runs. 4 years and mediocre basketball will not erase that love. Deal with it.
