I spent the weekend in Knoxville at the Coaching clinic hosted by Bruce Pearl and Pat Summitt. Throughout the weekend I observed the team practice multiple times. Here are some of my observations.

Ramar Smith- Potential is there, he looks like an athlete. But, as far as his national ranking, he is overrated. His shot selection and decision making is questionable. His outside shot is not good. He plays with no energy or passion. He is lazy on defense. You heard it first right here...he will not be our starting PG the 1st game of the season.

Josh Tabb - He was very underrated. He is going to be the glueman for this group of freshman. He will not redshirt. He will get PT this season. Great athlete, plays with intensity, gets after it on defense, above average outside shot, good size.

Marques Johnson- It is pronounced Marcus. He is the best "true PG" we have. Great physical build, good handles, plays hard, good decision maker. He does not have upper level lateral quickness to guard elite PG's and that is the only thing holding him back from the starting PG spot.

Wayne Chism- He is the defensive post we need. He has goods skills, i.e. shooting, dribbling, post moves, etc. But he is a little too soft with the ball in the paint. I think it is just because it is a huge adjustment from high school to college. He will get there.

Duke Crews- I did not get to see his full potential because he did not seem to practice with full intensity. His athletic ability is evident. He is the best "athlete" on the team. His outside game is nowhere near where it needs to be to play the SF position. He will not play the 3 spot any this season. His defense does not look to be his strong point.

Chris Lofton- He has lost a good amount of weight since last season and looks a step quicker. He still gets off some amazing shots and is deadly. His pressure defense seems to be the biggest improvement due to his new weight.

Dane Bradshaw- He looks to be 100% healthy and will be the same important player he was last season. He does every little thing you can ask as well as you can ask him to do it. He just physically isnt gifted enough to be a domiant SEC player.

JuJuan Smith- Wow, he could be special if he chose to be. He hustles and gets after it, but only on his own time. In games, but he takes practices off. He is an amazing ball hawk on defense. Him and Josh Tabb could terrorize a backcourt with pressure man-to-man defense. I think you will see intances where JuJuan is guarding the PG and Tabb the SG and being very effective. His shot is great and his handles are good. If he had any solid decision making he could be a good PG, but its just not his game.

Ryan Childress- He will have to get minutes this season, unfortunately. But at least he does look like he has improved a lot since last season. He is more slender, but more cut. Very strong. His athleticism has improved and his speed and quickness are better. He will never be a upper-level SEC player, but I think he has gotten himself to the point where he can be serviceable until Chism and Crews develop.

Thanks for the update. This season will be interesting to say the least.

Interesting take. I will admit that I have watched Ramar a few times since he got here and thought he definitely looked like a freshman but "lazy" and "no energy" is pretty harsh. I think he WILL be our starting PG especially with the injury to Howell.

I haven't seen as much potential in Tabb as you. He looks to have a decent outside shot but we have plenty of spot up shooters already. Maybe he has come on as of late.

I agree that Johnson is a nice player and handles the ball well for someone of his size. I don't recall seeing him play point in the practices I saw, but maybe he is now? I saw him as more of a 3.

Chism is a very polished big man for a freshman. I don't agree that his inside game is soft, I just think he is a bit more of a "finesse" type player. I have been impressed with his defense on Childerss and Crews.

Crews is going to get his points on easy looks in the paint and some "garbage" type baskets like off of a rebound. I don't expect Crews to be able to create much and he was not able to get his shot off with Chism guarding him. Of course, not many on our team can.

Dane - I wonder if he plays the 4 again some with the loss of Wingate? Right now you have Crews, Chism, and Childress down low and we are going to need more bodies. I guess since Bradshaw did it last year he may get minutes there... thoughts?

JuJuan has shot the ball VERY well the times I have seen him and I look for him to be one of the leaders on this team. Him and Bradshaw are really the only veteran guys that can be vocal. If not for Lofton, he would easily be a starter.

Childress- I think he is going to surprise a few people this year. He has a nice midrange shot and he hussles. He is, in fact, much better than last year. I agree that he is not physically gifted enough to dominate in our league but he will give us some much needed minutes down low.

Good observations by both.
My take so far is...
Ramar - The starting point guard spot is his to lose. Seems to distribute the ball nicely and has good ball handling skills. Probably needs some work on his jumper. As far as lazy, I can't comment on that for I haven't noticed.
Tabb- I think he will come along nicely. I don't know exactly where he will fit in. My guess is he will see some minutes subbing for Lofton and JuJuan. I don't think he will see much time at the point.
Johnson - I have been impressed with his play so far. He is alot bigger than I imagined he would be. Seems to be a good defender. Might cause some trouble with smaller front courts. I predict he will be the biggest suprise of the the freshman class.
Chism - I agree with Freak that he is more of a finesse player. He has shown he can knock down the 15 footer. Chism and Crews should be a nice one -two punch.
Crews - He looks like he will be a tough player. His biggest talent I believe is his rebounding. Look for most of his points coming down low on the block. Alot of putbacks and easy dunks. Once he has a year or so of SEC play under his belt, I think he will develop into one of the better big men in the league.
JuJuan - Looks like he still can be deadly from the outside. I think he will see a little more playing time than last year. Great defender. Still seems to be a little streaky from deep.
Dane - Probably will play everywhere as usual. I see him being the vocal leader of the team. Unfortunately he will probably see most of his time spent at the 4 since the lost of Major.
Lofton - Still stroking the deep ball. He does look light he has lost some weight and is quicker. He also looks alot stronger. In some practices I've seen he looks like he is being more aggressive in attacking the lane.

I do believe this team has along way to go to reaching their full potential. But, that potential seems very promising.

Love the summaries.

Hopefully the local radio airs the game tomorrow night, although I'm not counting on it.

I'm looking forward to the exhibition game on Tuesday. I think we'll be able to tell even more about the guys when they face up against someone besides themselves. Going against other competition will also show us some things that we need to work on, as these young guys are going to have to grow up quickly with one of the nation's toughest schedules.

Do you think Duke Crews, Wayne Chism, and Ramar Smith will start?
Great question. If I was coach Pearl I think I would start:

1. Smith
2. Lofton
3. Johnson
4. Bradshaw
5. Chism

Although i think it could be:

1. Smith
2. Lofton
3. Bradshaw
4. Crews
5. Chism
