UT gained no ground in the ESPN/USA Today poll with the Memphis win. 3 votes before, 3 votes after. I didn't expect to be ranked, but I thought we would be closer...interesting. And...Florida still at the 5 spot.....

I was just about to put up a post about this.....

How can Memphis still be ranked and the Vols be unranked when we beat them like a rented mule?

Memphis is the only quality win we have so far, we got blown out by UNC and lost to Butler. Thats the only reasoning i can see but i still think thats complete bull crap that we aren't ranked.

This is BB guys. It doesn't matter since there is a playoff. Maybe the Lords of College football will take note. But I won't hold my breath.

rankings are really not that important.......
tennessee has a long way to go but beating memphis was a good step.

give it about 5 more games and look at the RPI... that's what matters

A couple more wins and the Vols will be in the Top 25. If we were ranked higher in the pre-season we would still be in there. It's only because we were ranked so low to start. If they continue to take care of business, they will show up in the Top 25. Don't sweat it.

Florida was not even considered a tournament team at beginning of last year, much less a Top 25 team.

And look what happened to them.

when do RPI's come out? or are they already out??? that's always been a pretty good barometer of where you stand come tourney time....not bent out of shape because of the polls right now.

It's all good, as long as this team keeps improving, we'll be in good shape. That's all we need to worry about.

Anyone notice that the USAtoday poll only has 24 teams and OK State isn't ranked or receiving any votes, but is listed in the "dropped out of" section?

lets face it, we are a young team and havent been very impressive so far other than against memphis. we will be there by the end of the year.

Pearl will use this as motivation. And the freshmen need to be humbled. Being ranked only makes them think they're better than they are. Plus, the only time we want to be ranked is at the end of the season.

very true....I think it will be better for them not to be ranked till towards end of season. It gives them something to work for!

We're at #38. Memphis is at #36.

Beating Memphis helped us gain a lot of ground - not yet enough to be in the RPI Top 25, but we're getting there. More quality wins will help us crack the Top 25 in both RPI and the major polls.

Pearl's response to not being ranked:

"I don't think we're one of the Top 25 teams in the country," he said. "We've only beaten one team in the Top 25, and that was Memphis on our home floor. If you look at our schedule, there's a gazillion, majillion opportunities to move up or down in a poll. I'm not worried about it at this point."

You've got to love a coach that admits his team isn't as good as we'd like to think, despite just getting a high profile win against a top-20 team. He doesn't want the guys to get cocky. Plus, how many coaches would throw out a "majillion" in an interview? Genius!
