And Miami could bring eyeballs to the SEC? 🤔

Maybe not. Lots of folks in the area but they don't seem to support the U.

As I've noted here countless times, UM is a pretty small school. Their alumni footprint pales compared to UF and FSU. And the Miami of the 80s did not have to compete with the Marlins, the hockey team, the Heat. It was them and the Dolphins. More than any college team I can think of, Miami's popularity with locals was simply because it was local. Half the people in the stands for one of their games back in the day did not even know where the campus was, much less have gone there.

Take it for what it's worth, but this is a graph FSU came up with last fall when they first started complaining about their revenue from the ACC. By this, the U is the 3rd watched team in the ACC only trailing FSU and Clemson.

They only care about going to the games after they've been good for a while and it's fashionable to go.
That’s Miami sports in general, not exclusive to the Canes. Went to a weekend Marlins game in early August 2003 and there was less than 10k in the crowd for a team in the wildcard hunt. 6 weeks later I was at Game 5 of the World Series with a crowd of damn near 70k in the same stadium and everyone was a “Marlins fan for life”.

Miami is like Vanderbilt, but with a historically good football program and a Motley Crue fanbase. They're like if Vandy was Vandy, but was elite in the 80s/late 90s/early 2000s and had a rough crowd with no ties to the school as a fanbase. They are one of the most unique programs in CFB.

Good stuff. Also, the 70% figure is based on an average viewership that includes FSU. If you exclude FSU, then the average viewership drops almost 6% and FSU's average viewership is 80% more than the average of the rest of the teams.

Good points. They have also made multiple bad hires after Larry Coker lost his mojo.

Miami has Lionel Messi now. I doubt the Canes are even remotely on that town’s radar.

Miami - a pretend blue blood. Made a run back in the day. Projected an image, (marketing - remember the camouflage?) Clemson, you listening?

Hard to stay on top once you get there, VOLS recently have planted that doubt in many. Some programs can get in the wilderness and recover (and Tennessee looks to be doing that). Others, due to whatever - conference realignment, bad seasons due to coaching, and even geography (who wants to go to college in Nebraska?). Some once great teams lose momentum and can't recover. I was thinking FSU was on track for that, but they are actually have a similar history as the VOLS (except they were a woman's college back when Neyland coached, so no long term history). Similar in that they have a decent fan base, and were strong in Bowden era, aligning with the Fulmer Era.
