MSN - News - Michael Moore Faces U.S. Treasury Probe

The Associated Press
LOS ANGELES -- Academy Award-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is under investigation by the U.S. Treasury Department for taking ailing Sept. 11 rescue workers to Cuba for a segment in his upcoming health-care documentary "Sicko," The Associated Press has learned.
The investigation provides another contentious lead-in for a provocative film by Moore, a fierce critic of President Bush. In the past, Moore's adversaries have fanned publicity that helped the filmmaker create a new brand of opinionated blockbuster documentary.
"Sicko" promises to take the health-care industry to task the way Moore confronted America's passion for guns in "Bowling for Columbine" and skewered Bush over his handling of Sept. 11 in "Fahrenheit 9/11."
The Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control notified Moore in a letter dated May 2 that it was conducting a civil investigation for possible violations of the U.S. trade embargo restricting travel to Cuba. A copy of the letter was obtained Tuesday by the AP.
"This office has no record that a specific license was issued authorizing you to engage in travel-related transactions involving Cuba," Dale Thompson, OFAC chief of general investigations and field operations, wrote in the letter to Moore.
In February, Moore took about 10 ailing workers from the Ground Zero rescue effort in Manhattan for treatment in Cuba, said a person working with the filmmaker on the release of "Sicko." The person requested anonymity because Moore's attorneys had not yet determined how to respond.
Moore, who scolded Bush over the Iraq war during the 2003 Oscar telecast, received the letter Monday, the person said. "Sicko" premieres May 19 at the Cannes Film Festival and debuts in U.S. theaters June 29.
Moore declined to comment, said spokeswoman Lisa Cohen.
After receiving the letter, Moore arranged to place a copy of the film in a "safe house" outside the country to protect it from government interference, said the person working on the release of the film.

Treasury officials declined to answer questions about the letter. (Story Continues On Next Page...)

I just wish he'd shave and tuck in his shirt. Not that I'd take him any more seriously, but he gives all of us fat guys a bad rap by going out in public dressed like a slacker.

W is going after him. he can't afford anymore bad news. plus i think 75% of that crap he makes in his movies is true.

Crap is the right word. Moore hits and touches on some raw subjects and brings up some valid points but not 75%. Problem is that his manner is delivering his messages is about as good as Rosie's on the View. Sad really.

While I'm sure this movie will be interpreted as more evidence against Bush, an indictment of the healthcare system is only tangentally connected to Bush.

The whole idea that Moore would take 9/11 workers to Cuba for medical care they/he claim cannot be received in the US tells you all you need to know about this movie. To suggest that somehow Cuba has a better healthcare system is laughable. I'm quite sure that any treatment Moore's folks received is quite atypical -- yet many will believe that Cuba is a shining light of healthcare compared to the US. Why anyone believes this guy is beyond me.

Moore "probe"=witch hunt

Moore's a little over the top, he has been right on in his criticisms of Bush and the current administration. Bush-friendlies hate Moore because he shines a light on the piece of crud that is George W Bush. Period.

BS. Alot of people don't like Moore. This isn't an exclusive for Bush.

And a "little over the top"? Please....

Moore basically cuts, copies and pastes his films to make them fit HIS agenda. I would really hope the majority of people do not take him seriously.

I give him credit for getting out there and at least trying to do something about the way things are.

Bush certainly has his faults but I would argue it is equally likely that many that hate Bush do so because they believe the distortions of MM. If his criticism were right on, he wouldn't need to distort and outright mistate facts the way he does.

I'm amazed that those who berate Bush for his misleading have no problem with it when it comes to MM. I guess if the message fits your views, then the details don't matter.

FWIW - I've disliked Moore's tactics going back to Roger and Me, Bowling for Columbine, etc. Fahrenheit 9/11 simply confirmed the propagandist that Moore is.

I used to love W but I have lost a lot of respect for him. But that is also why I don't trust or respect polititians in general either. Our political culture is spinning out of control IMO.

Which makes him completely worthless since his genre is supposed documentaries; not fiction.

i wouldn't say it is fiction, but more or less his opinion or point of view which in my opinion isn't always right. he is 100% right though in saying W is the worst president in recent times though.

I'm saying if you can't respect a guy or group who goes about their ways lying, deceiving and manipulating, the current administration probably isn't for you..

politicians in general lie, deceive and manipulate. this administration does not have a monopoly on any of those

that is very true. they are just the first to not care who knows about it. they lie to you and just make excuses. also most don't cost 4,000 people there lives to fulfill daddy's mission.
