Michael Munoz to Accept Woody Hayes Award Friday


University of Tennessee offensive lineman Michael Munoz will be in Columbus, Ohio, Jan. 28, to accept a Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Award. The presentation will be made by the University and Northwest Sertoma Club of Columbus at its 18th annual awards banquet.

A native of Mason, Ohio, Munoz was dominant from the start and capped his college career as a 2004 consensus All-America. At 6'6" and 315 pounds he was named Freshman All-America in 2000 by The Sporting News and Rivals.com. He started all 46 games in which he played and was elected co-captain of the 2003 and 2004 teams. Despite a series of injuries, he finished the 2004 season with 55 intimidation blocks and was named SEC Lineman of the Week for his game against Louisiana Tech. Munoz was selected 2004 consensus having made all star squads as selected by the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, and Walter Camp Foundation.

Munoz graduated with a 3.67 grade-point average and won the 2004 National College Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete Award, named the Vincent dePaul Draddy Trophy. He graduate in political science in the fall and has been a regular member of the University's Dean's List. Munoz was also elected to the 2002 CoSIDA Academic All-District Team and a three-time Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll member.

A member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, he spoke at schools and churches in the Knoxville area. He participated in a Red Cross Relief Fund, a Softball Home Run Derby, and yearly hospital visits. Munoz has served as an instructor with a Boys and Girls Club Camp and has participated in Camp Kionia, a camp for children with special needs.

The Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Awards are presented annually as a living memory to former Ohio State football coach Woody Hayes. They honor the outstanding man and woman in each of the three collegiate divisions for demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics and community service

I think this is a great honor for Michael and a great tribute to our Vols!!! Congrats to him and his family!!!
