I think this is great for our squad to pick up a real solid Def Coord like Mattison, especially with the way the defense was last year.

He will still need to round up some good players, but this has to look nice when recruits see someone like Mattison in that position. :hi: :peace2:

Thoughts???

Seems like a good hire and hopefully will improve that defense at Michigan.

Good hire for Michigan. The question is will he stay when another NFL team comes calling?

IMO, he stays. At his age I would speculate that he is looking to retire sometime in the near future and make Michigan his last stop, after he helps them return to national prominence.

Yeah, I don't think he would leave for another NFL team. If that was the case and he really wanted to be in the NFL he probably would have just stayed with the Ravens. It is not like the Ravens got rid of him, and they are still a top defense in the NFL, so he probably relished having those kind of players under him.

I think he really wants to see Michigan back on top, and wanted to help out his buddy Hoke bringing Michigan back with the way the defense was last year.

Buddy of mine is a Ravens fan and is thrilled that this guy is moving on. My friend has done nothing but complain about their how comparatively soft their defense has been ever since Rex Ryan left.

Mattison was alright. Not bad, not great, but decent enough. He did get a bit conservative at times but he was okay as a whole. I'm more excited about his replacement (Chuck Pagano), though.

The defense wasn't the same as when rex was running it..if he didn't have those players on it they would have been terrible imo

Really? You mean like if Rex didn't have the same players Marvin left him, his D wouldn't have been as good either.

Well, the roster was losing some talent. The defense had a lot of older players that were on their way out and the process isn't complete yet.

Rex Ryan had an ugly side as well. He actually had a reputation for being a bit of a choker, especially in 2008, and even he curled up a bit. But the 2007 season was a disaster, when the defense allowed almost 400 points. The secondary was decimated with injuries and Ryan did a very poor job of adjusting. Rex's scheme relied heavily on man coverage, and that became a problem when we saw things like David Pittman Island, which is every bit as horrifying as it sounds. So while I'd love to still have Rex around...he wasn't perfect.
