I think it would be hard to leave out an undefeated P5 champion in a year where there can be only be 2 other ones (Alabama/Georgia and Miami).

Huh? The Big 10 has been in the playoff every year so far. OSU twice and MSU once.

That number likely wouldn't be that much cheaper just due to not making the CFP this year.
