Even amongst Knoxville's notably conflicted and sub-standard sports media members, Mike Griffith has never been confused with John Feinstein, often ranking amongst its weakest members. His latest drivel is only noteworthy as I believe it to be effective proof that he has officially abandoned any semblance of even his poor journalistic standards, and instead, has become nothing more than a shill for the UTAD. A publicist with media credentials, if you will. Now, it seems that he only needs to print up business cards and type up his undoubtedly poorly worded and grammatically incorrect press release to make it official.

Shameful, even in this market.

And the recycling of the line, "....severe, unprecedented self-imposed penalties..." only further proves tha he's not only a poor "journalist", but a lazy one at that.

But, like any good publicist, give him credit for at least staying on message.

At some point you would think he would take a step back and desire to be a respected journalist.

But, he gets easy access and gets paid to draw up bunt defenses for his softball team on KNS' dime. Probably not a bad gig.

I don't see the problem. Most "journalists" have an agenda of one kind or other and Griffin is no different. If you don't like someone giving the UT side of the story, don't read it.

except he has claimed it's not his job to give the UT side

Except it goes against everything you learn in journalism 101.

Pulling the head coach and top assistant off the recruiting trail for one year is a severe, unprecedented, self-imposed penalty. What else is he supposed to call it?

Okay, I just read the entire article.

Look, I'm the biggest Mike Griff critic out there. But I didn' t see anything that just jumped out at me other than the revelation that Hamilton saying that he had no intentions of firing Pearl even if he was given a q year suspension (my first time hearing that).

Other than that, I thought it was an amazingly fair and vanilla article. Am I missing something?

Doesn't everything in the media today go against that? There are very few unbiased sportswriters that don't have an agenda.

Very few who are unbiased, but literally lying in bed with the the team you cover is another thing.

I do agree this article isn't one of those instances though.

Every human is influenced by their prejudice in one form
or another. If he had been advocating thirty days in the
electric chair for Pearl then you would have been fine with it.

Thanks for letting me know my thoughts in a different scenario.

Agreed. However, while it's well-known that several members - if not the overwhelming majority - of the local sports "media" have conflicting relationships with those personalities whom they are assigned to cover (conflicting to the tenets of objective journalism, that is), for the most part, they make some attempt to prevent its obvious or undeniable appearance in their reporting.

While Griff failed that lowest-level litmus test some time ago, as innumerous posts and threads on this very site can attest, his most recent articles on BP and the on-going 'AA situation have served to shatter even his already notably low standards.

I think he has has not only crossed over from any modicum of journalism, but brazenly so, and should now be classified as nothing more than infotainment.

I think its an important distinction for a news organization to make, frankly.

The self-imposed penalties were unprecendented. What's the big deal? He's a BEAT writer guys. He's paid to give the facts of what happens on a day-to-day basis (or "on the beat") within UT basketball. He's not a columnist. Columnists are paid to give opinions, Beat Writers are paid to give facts. If you want a scathing, mean-spirited article read John Adams. If you want facts about a program on the beat read Griffith or Ward or Gribble. Before everyone goes all "journalistic integrity" on the guy maybe you should understand his role and his employers expectations.

If he is just to report the facts and nothing else, he does a real crappy job.

Agree. I don't ever see Griff as someone with the capacity to think critically. But when you factor in his intimacy with this staff, as well as his fear of Internet Forbes, you no longer have anything close to a journalist. You have a puppet/lemming.

If that is his sole job duty, than he sucks even worse than we give him credit for.

I don't live in Knoxville and I don't guess I read the guy enough to know what you guys are talking about. What facts does he not give a good job of communicating? He breaks down the games. He writes about practices and injuries. He writes about what he knows to be going on behind-the-scenes in the deal with the NCAA. He doesn't have a ton of access to the inner-workings of the AD but he knows the staff and players as well as any writer out there. He's not an investigative reporter. He's not a columnist.

I think you're grasping on this one.
