Is it just me or is there a common belief that Mike Hamilton is not the type of guy who would rock the boat if Fulmer and the football team were to repeat last seasons disappointment? I tend to think he was ruthless when it came to Buzz, the guy may look harmless but I am sure if its his job or Fulmers on the line it would be bye bye bubba!

I think there is more to all that than just what Mike Hamilton wants though. Buzz was easy, nobody really cared about men's basketball then. Football is a whole different ball of wax.

Yes good point, sometimes I forget where I am although at the minute everyone is a basketball fan, lol, I wonder why?

And because not enough time has passed for any sort of reality to set in.

That's my real worry with men's hoops. When a new coach comes in there's always high hopes, and Pearl came in on the wings of taking Wisconsin-Milwaukee to the (Sweet 16? Elite 8?).

Right now the players as well as the fans are psychologically under-the-influence. The real test will come after some adversity and time-passed- not so much for Pearl himself as for the player's willingness to keep believing in themselves via him. The fans will follow the W column.

if fulmer repeats his 5-6 record of this season hamilton will send him packing. he is interested in seeing alot of orange in the seats and selling his luxery boxes. they will probably be a hard sell this year. if we lose to florida early you will see alot more of the opposing teams fans in neyland stadium than orange, fulmer better win early and win atleast 8 games or he is in trouble.

Mike may have had significant input regarding the firing of Buzz, but if it comes to replacing the football coach at the University of Tennessee he will not be at the head of the stream in that decision making process. He will be the hatchet man, the guy who has to stand in front of the cameras, so to speak, but that decision will come from much more influential people than a meager Athletic Director. :D

The AD at the elite football schools know how to talk the talk when it comes time to make the move, but you can bet your season tickets that the old money is where the final decision rests.

AT UGA it was always the Big Guy or the powers behind the scenes that pushed Dooley to make needed changes. Dooley was god to them but when he bumbled through some needed changes he was bumped out as well. The AD in this case was symbolic. He's usually the face or the one to go out and as someone else said stand in front of the cameras to make the news public. If they can't handle that then they get bumped as well.

"that the old money is where the final decision rests"

+++++++++++++++++++

As in Pilot Oil and Thunder Enterprises-- to name a few.

LIO I look at this from a different perspective. Hamilton is first and foremost a "money man." That is his background and that is his focus. It would have been easy for him to keep Buzz but the dollars coming in to hoops were so low that he took the risk and voila, here comes the cash flow.

I suspect that if we have another disasterous season in football, like we just had, Fulmer will be an employee of the athletic department staff in a new position. College football is getting past what it was meant to be. It is now first and foremost about money. Fulmer would not survive if he fails in 2006.

OTOH, I love Fulmer and hope we have a heckuva year in 2006. Get 'r dun Phil!

I agree. It's all about money. On the political side, he is the chief fundraiser or the head of the RNC or DNC. His job is to do what it takes to fill the seats and boxes with season ticket holders, then whoever else. If the money doesn't come in, he has to make changes. if he doesn't then HE is gone. Unfortunately this is the way college sports has become.
