According to ESPN's Chris Low:

"Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton said he met with the eight early enrollees Wednesday morning and advised them to go to class.

However, there have been reports that some of the players didn’t start their semester classes.

Hamilton said it’s a moot point because, “after 12:01 on the first day of class, if the student-athletes are here on campus and enrolled in a minimum of 12 hours of class, they have matriculated to the University of Tennessee.”

He was responding to several players saying on Tuesday night that they overheard former recruiting coordinator Ed Orgeron on a speakerphone telling the freshmen not to go to class and that they instead had scholarship offers from USC.

If that indeed occurred, Hamilton said he would consider such methods “unethical.”

Hamilton later added that those players on campus were already locked in at Tennessee “contrary to what they were told by someone else,” which was obviously a shot at Orgeron.

Hamilton said he had no intention of letting any of those players out of their scholarships"

Thompkins wasn't on campus, but as a juco, he's already signed a LOI. Rumor is he's decommitted, but if he has, he'll have to sit a year before he goes anywhere else.

If they were to ask for a release, I wouldn't necessarily be against it, but only if there was a stipulation that they couldn't go to USC. After Ed's stunt, I wouldn't allow any of them a release to USC.

I'm sure NCAA will grant a waiver to every kid that wants one because of the unique circumstances.

ESPN's recruiting "expert" said that until they are physically in class they are not locked in. I wonder who's right?

I would like to believe Mike Hamilton, as he probably researched the matter as soon as he heard what was going on last night. Also, I would rather believe a University official rather than a so-called "expert" any day! However, I think this is all a mood point because the NCAA will probably grant waivers for who ever wants one!

According to the NCAA website their definition of enrollment means a student athlete began classes. I will be curious how this plays out. Right now I am teaching courses at a college. I have students that are registered for classes, but until they have been in the class the school does not recognize them as enrolled only registered. Those two terms have a huge meaning regarding financial aid and credits attempted.

I do know that any athlete that participated in practice, like bowl practice, would have to sit out unless they met the exception.

That's bush league by Hamilton if true. Let the kids go if they don't want to be here, its not their fault, they were betrayed like the rest of us...

Hamilton is only making the situation worse by steering these kids into a situation that he knows will block them from being able to decide what is best for themselves. From what I have heard, I have lost all respect for him and wish the University of Tennessee would remove him and all the scraps of this entire situation and start fresh. Step 1: Get a new AD and Head Coach with some good character and integrity.

Jay Mariotti also confirms that the EE are "locked in" because they were on campus at 12:01am. LINK: http://jay-mariotti.fanhouse.com/2010/01/13/latest-lane-violation-skip-class-kids?icid=sphere_newsaol_inpage_fanhouse2

Article is also a great read. In addition, check out Josh McNeil's story of how Kiffin never embraced Tennessee tradition (***A MUST READ***): http://ncaafootball.fanhouse.com/2010/01/12/volunteer-sources-say-kiffin-never-embraced-tennessee/

The AD is doing the kids a great disservice by telling them to do something. It's called scare tactics. The kids should take the time to decide where they want to be, if it's Tennessee that is good but you don't do further harm to the innocent players by trying to scare them. I hope the Tennessee players decide to stay but I can't fault them for wanting to leave, first the HC then the AD trying scare tactics.

If you want your players to stay, show them why they should stay, don't give them even more reason to leave.
