If you have a sub to The Athletic go read this about Mike Leach. You may come to the conclusion that I did - so glad they didn't bring him to K-ville.

They interviewed some of his past QB's and here are some early quotes:

Brink: Our No. 1 rule was: Never say or ask or do anything that would get him talking about anything besides the film.

Apodaca: We would get pissed at people in the meeting room if they asked a question toward the end of the meeting. We would have these fall camp meetings that went until 9:30 at night and if there was a young freshman in there asking questions, we were all looking at him like, “Oh my God, dude, shut up because we will be in here for an hour and a half more on this subject alone. Stop asking questions, damn it.”

Isaac Dotson, 2013: I was playing QB at the time, and we had our first position meeting, and 90 percent of the meeting had nothing to do with football. Maybe five plays into watching film, something happened that sparked a classic Mike Leach tangent.

Brink: Every week we’d look at what the defense was going to do inside the red zone. So every week Coach Leach would lean back and be like, “All right, guys. When we’re down in the red zone, they’re going to do one of two things. They’ll be in man or they’ll be in zone.” Early on, you look around at the other quarterbacks like, “Are you serious? That’s what I came to play college football to learn?”

Apodaca: ...On doing check-downs - "He’s like, “Well, you’re the one who sees it. I’m just giving you a suggestion.”

Well worth the read.

I don't know if Leach would've been successful here but damn if it wouldn't have been fun for a while.

You're right about that. But, I'm about funned out. After Kiffin's show. Doolittles wierdness. Butch's marketing. I'll take Coach Pruitt boring me to tears if we can win something on Saturdays. We've got the boring part, so now let's ...

Something must be working. The guy wins football games. I wish we would have hired him.

Feel like we dodged a bullet on that one. Already had a used car saleman and didn't need a philosopher. Hope we got what we needed, a football coach.

Seems like he's trying to get these guys to make decisions on their own. I can see why that might be a good thing. Also the whole, they'll be in man or zone, well buddy if you can't figure out which they're in that might cause you some issues. Sounds like these guys just didn't want to do the work that was needed.

Gotta start with the basics. Can't assume they know anything just cause they play the position.

If we would have hired him or anyone else, most of you guys would be putting all the rest of the coaches down, even Pruitt!

I walked the plank on hiring this guy after watching the YouTube of him dropping a hundred f-bombs in a 5 minute dress down of his team.

Well I’m assuming if you’ve watched Hard Knocks at all you wouldn’t have been happy with Gruden as the hire either .

He's 49-40 at a school who's All-time record is 550–553–45 (.499). He's exceeding expectations.
That seems a kinda mild positive. (0.6125). I'm not dismissing it, and I think he's a great and fascinating person, but I'm not sure that this is a ringing endorsement?

It's one thing to let one fly now and then. Every other word was fjck.
I think I know the video you are talking about. It was a bit much, but I think the Pirate is pretty hilarious and harmless. I don’t think he would’ve meshed well some of the old money boosters in the program here.

It wasn't so much that I was offended. I thought that he looked like a ****ing idiot.

He was easily the best coach we could have hired. Washington State wasn't a .500 team when he took over. They'd had something like 9 wins in 5 or 6 years when he took over. When Lincoln Riley was 21 years old Leach had him as a walk-on QB. Leach told him to stop playing football and get ready to start coaching, because he had a mind for that and wasn't a good player. Then he trained Riley for several years. Now Riley is one of the best young coaches in college football. I'd have taken Leach just for that ability to build coaches. On the way to that we'd have had a lot of fun, scored a lot of points and probably been back to 10+ wins a year by year 3-4.

He's 49-40 at a school that rarely plays anyone worth a rip.

He’s recruiting to Pullman, Washington. What he’s done there is nothing short of amazing. Name me another HC who has done as much at WSU. He wasn’t too shabby at Texas Tech, either.

Mike Leach has consistently done more with less throughout his entire coaching career. That is exactly what Tennessee needed at the time his hire was axed.

I'm sorry. A barely 500 record is not amazing in my book.
