Mike Leach... WTF is in this guy's head?

He’s recruiting to Pullman, Washington. What he’s done there is nothing short of amazing. Name me another HC who has done as much at WSU. He wasn’t too shabby at Texas Tech, either.

Mike Leach has consistently done more with less throughout his entire coaching career. That is exactly what Tennessee needed at the time his hire was axed.

Mike Price went to a freakin Rose Bowl twice and won the PAC-10 lol

He’s a fruit cake and would have been a disaster here. This is the SEC.
Where we need to be super damned serious all the time.

He's a weirdo but there's a method to the madness, for all the funny stories you don't hear one guy saying how he didn't make them better.

He's an original and probably my favorite guy in College Football.

I've gone to bat for Leach and still do. What he has done at WSU and previously at TTU is nothing short of amazing. WSU's last winning season before he got there was 2003. From 2004 to 2011 they went 29-66 and from 2008 to 2010 winning only 5 games. In just Leach's 2nd season (2013) with the program he got them to a bowl game for the first time since 2003. Don't tell me that he can't coach or develop programs. He must be doing something right because 13 of his former players or assistant coaches have become head coaches at some point in their careers.

He simplifies the complex, and complicates the obvious. He'd be a great mind running a Dollar General in Coalfield TN or a fortune 500 company.

Devils Digest, the Arizona State Rivals.com affiliate, reported last week that there were four programs involved in a show similar to HBO's popular "Hard Knocks" series, which follows an NFL team throughout training camp and leading up to final roster cuts. The site said Arizona State, Alabama, Penn State and Washington State were the four schools chosen for the show and that ASU would be featured during the lead up to its home game against Washington State on Oct. 12.

Last week, ESPN reported that HBO is "in negotiations" with those four programs for a "behind-the-scenes-access show" for the upcoming season. Per ESPN, the schools discussed "allowing cameras to document each program for a week."

Penn State subsequently released a statement saying it was "exploring the prospect" of working on the project. Nittany Lions coach James Franklin told reporters that it's "great" that Penn State is involved in the discussions.

"It's great that we're in that conversation, but no decisions have been made at this time," Franklin said per PennLive.com. "As you can imagine, there's a lot that goes into it, not just with Penn State but with the Big Ten and a lot of other things factor into it. At this point, we haven't made a decision, but once we have all the details, we can make a decision at that point."

HBO has yet to make an announcement about the show. However, HBO camera crews were in Pullman filming WSU's practice on Friday.

"Hard Knocks" has descended on #WSU. Sounds like a deal still hasn't been finalized, but all signs are pointing to the HBO program featuring the Cougars this fall.

WSU head coach Mike Leach said he told his team to do their best to ignore the cameras.

"It's alright. Just ignore them," Leach said. "They want a genuine look and we're not going to get our work done unless we effectively ignore one another. So it seemed like it worked pretty good for both sides."

If Leach is involved, it will definitely be must-see TV.

He was easily the best coach we could have hired. Washington State wasn't a .500 team when he took over. They'd had something like 9 wins in 5 or 6 years when he took over. When Lincoln Riley was 21 years old Leach had him as a walk-on QB. Leach told him to stop playing football and get ready to start coaching, because he had a mind for that and wasn't a good player. Then he trained Riley for several years. Now Riley is one of the best young coaches in college football. I'd have taken Leach just for that ability to build coaches. On the way to that we'd have had a lot of fun, scored a lot of points and probably been back to 10+ wins a year by year 3-4.

Yet OU hired the student and not the teacher. As I have stated many times, there is a reason why not big time school will hire him. He is where he belongs. A small time place with no expectations or pressure to succeed. Hire Leach as an OC? Absolutely. As a HC? Lol. He would get destroyed in the SEC. he might be a little better than Botch or Doofus.

because the student was an OC while the teacher was a full time coach? riley was coach in waiting, not some nobody they pulled out D3 that year.

In the past 5 years there have been plenty big time programs that could have paid Leach more than WSU could, yet none did. If that doesnt say a lot then I dont know what does.

He's 49-40 at a school who's All-time record is 550–553–45 (.499). He's exceeding expectations.

So you're saying he's 5-to-4 at a school that's normally 5-to-5. He may be "exceeding expectations" but he's doing it in the smallest way possible, heh.

Just counted. They had 20 wins in those six years, not 9.

Sure, the Wulff years were terribad, but get this: Bill Doba, the coach before Wulff, had just about the same win rate as Mike Leach has.

Bill who?

Exactly.

The teacher was Bob Stoops 1st OC at OU and installed the system that they are using today. The basic difference in what the Sooners run and what Leach employees is the running game. It's extremely difficult to recruit RBs to Lubbock and Pullman. The last time a good RB went to Tech is when Art Briles was the RB coach in Lubbock.

Makes me laugh how some of the people on here just do not get that the guy is coaching at a school that has very little success over its entire existence and has made it better over time...Same with Texas Tech yet people think he sucks as a coach...Amazing...I would've loved to have had him here at UT...Certainly would've been entertaining.

That's a great way of putting it. I think Leach has a skillset/coaching style that plays well at schools with lower expectations and limited resources. He's quirky, entertaining, and has a way of sneaking up on you by winning games he isn't "supposed to" win. If you don't have huge expectations, your coach is entertaining, wins 8 games, and takes you to a bowl, you're perfectly happy with him. People don't live and die by Washington St or Texas Tech football, so they love him. A colleague of mine's husband is a WSU fan. Loves him some Mike Leach, even in the first couple seasons where they weren't any good. He's a pretty knowledgeable fan, but you also can just tell he doesn't take his fandom as seriously as SEC people do. Leach is perfect for a fanbase like that.

If he was given the keys to a premier program with expectations of winning championships and very little room for error, I think he'd drive it off a cliff.

Leach is a guy that is going to consistently win half his games and go to a bowl. He’s also a guy that opposing coaches would hate to play against. He’s going to win an occasional game that he has no chance in bc he’s so damn unconventional. He would’ve been moderately successful but I don’t believe he could ever get us to the playoffs.

Eventually, I think his Air Raid would be figured out by opposing defenses as well. Might take a couple years and he'd have some early success, but these SEC defenses with the superior athletes would eventually get it. He's always coached offenses either in a conference that doesn't play it (Big 12) or doesn't quite have the top end talent to stop it (Pac 12). I think he'd ultimately struggle at an SEC or Big Ten school, perhaps would fare better in the ACC.

This seasons UofH vs Wazzou game should be interesting. The pregame presser with Holgerson and Leach could be must see tv.
