Mike Leach's influence spreads in the NFL

OMG, NFL DCs would love to dissect the manic one's air raid offense. No one else with that style offense has panned out. Everyone thought "the ole ball coach" would light it up with the fun and gun too.

His influence is pervasive in the NFL now. His coaching tree has now spread there and people are seeking out any part of it. The new defensive rules in the NFL have made passing a priority. Gone are the days of 3 yards and a cloud of dust. Spurrier would likely light the NFL up these days.

Just remember Leach won only 12 games in his first 3 years at WSU. He only won 3 games in his third season. Sometimes patience pays off.

Sometimes it certainly does.

For “now” to me it seems a bit different. Washington ST had only won 9 total games the previous 4 seasons before Leach got there. The team also improved dramatically in year two.

I hope patience does pay off in this scenario, time will tell. But right now I’m not happy in the least.

Yeah keep thinking that. Leach would get destroyed in the NFL. I mean he can’t even beat a bad USC team or Washington. He hasn’t won squat in college.

I think many, myself included are not happy right now. I believe Pruitt can turn things around. And it would be great for the program if he did. I certainly hope things get better soon.

Once again, it's been debated ad naseum what Leach has done and where he's done it. He went 11-2 last year at the equivalent of Vanderbilt. He now has 2 QBs that played for him starting in the NFL and 5 more from his system. One of his QBs is a head coach in the NFL and several other teams now run a version of his offense. He's won 129 more games that our current head coach in college. He's been to 14 more bowl games than our current head coach.

Agree

Just saying no one can say if Mike Leach could or could not succeed here or in the SEC. he did have a history of at least winning (as a head coach and building), so that gives “hopes” something to rely on.

And showing wide open passing O’s are currently working in the SEC.

I wasn’t even a Leach guy. I thought Tennessee could and “might” actually throw some money at and get an even more proven coach.

I was wrong. Leach was prob the most proven they could have landed.......and I’m not saying he is “championship” proven.

Core concepts of the Air Raid such as 4 verticals and mesh plays are pervasive in college and the NFL.

How many championships?

Zero.

However, most level head fans including me aren’t expecting our coach to win championships.

All I ask is for improvement and to be competitive in the East.

Pruitt is sitting at 1-3 heading into a much tougher slump on the schedule and he has the nerve to say this team is 100x better than last years? We don’t need anymore moral victories. We need actual results.

In the NFL, Leach would be guaranteed similar talent levels to other teams because of how the draft works, plus salary caps. He's never had that in Pullman or Lubbock (no coaches there ever have).

Pruitt knows more about football than everyone on this board combined. I know its tough for some fans to accept that but its fact. Maybe this team is much better. He would know much better than you or I. Maybe we would be more competitive if the players would stop screwing up so much. It seems like we have been in positions to easily be 3-1 right now. Yet somehow, a player usually makes a dumb mistake. I dont want to hear its all on the coaches because thats BS and you know it. Can Pruitt do better? He absolutely should be. But the players should be playing much better as well.

No, you are right, you've convinced me. The right people always get hired for the right jobs, and talented (quirky) people are never overlooked in the workplace.

Yes thats it. I am sure the tons of teams that have hired new coaches in the past 5-7 years have all just overlooked Leach.

Did y'all hear he wanted to come here?
I think hes a good coach. Might have done ok here. He ain't here, prolly never will be.

Have always been curious as to why he cant get out of obscure locations like Lubbock and Pullman. What he did and has done at both of those places is pretty impressive and there have been a bunch of openings just since hes been is the remote NW.
