Mike Slive suspends Ole Miss player for hit

That guy seriously thinks their fan base is important enough for the SEC to notice a highlight reel for punishment?

First time I watched it, I thought it was clearly helmet to helmet. Watched it again, and it looks like helmet to chest. It's borderline.

I probably would have flagged it, but no suspension. I'd say the only reason for the suspension is because it wasn't flagged.

Hmmm, I think the hit was unneeded as the ball was overthrown, the kid did not even attempt to locate the ball. I didn't see a helmet to helmet, certainly doesn't justify a suspension.

If the NCAA, NFL and HSF wanted to eliminate a majority of the head injuries, all they have to do is put foam on the outside of the helmet. They know it, they just want to play both sides of the fence.

Oh really, helmet engineer? It's not as simple as you think.

The only way to reduce the impact force is to make the helmets fatter, and nobody would like that. Using softer materials will give you adverse effects.

You don't have to be an engineer, even though I am an industrial engineer to know if you put a crap load of foam on something it will lessen the impact greatly. They have pro-types of these types of helmets years ago. NCAA and NFL don't want them -- look like the one eye guy from Monsters Inc. and no cracking sound.

"nobody would like that" ... exactly.

Slive picks this hit to make a "Roger Goodell-like" statement? I've seen worse...and doubt seriously this will deter anything

Wow, when did football become a non-violent sport. This was a clean hit, period. Receiver pulled up to protect himself, which was a smart move on his part. The last thing the SEC needs is Slive going all Goodell on the league.

I don't get this post, how is foam on the outside of a helmet supposed to prevent the brain from rattling around in the skull? Making a fatter helmet wouldn't work, either.

The foam shell absorbs a lot of the impact and keeps a bunch of the motion off of the brain. If the helmet fits snugly and absorbs that blow other keeps the damage from happening.

He isn't BSing. A handful of players used to wear the foam shells in the 70s or 80s.

Alright, so you wrap a foam shell around a box with a smaller, somewhat fragile object inside. You then throw the box against a wall. The foam wrap obviously protects the box, but how does it prevent the object inside from rattling around?

The skull doesn't cling to the brain like tech fit on a football player, it just encases it, and even a small amount of pressure on the surface of the brain results in memory loss.

Just another reason for Slive to go.
Clean hit.

Speaking of hits, maybe some of these qb's that lead their wr's into a bad situation should be suspended. Just saying.

I guess I need glasses because I don't agree with the people saying it's a clean hit and he hit him with his shoulder. Looked like he went for a helmet shot and looked like it was a helmet shot. Just my opinion...

I have often thought if we are going to have these game changing penalties for hits, shouldn't they be subject to instant replay. Because the hit in the video is clearly a good clean hit, if it would have drawn a penalty, that would have given the O a first down, therefore changing the outcome of the game. (i understand this game was over at this point) Its a serious question.
It seems the Offense gets all the advantage and the defense has to mind its p's and q's. Its stupid and its killing the game.

Similar to soft wall technology in NASCAR..

Watched the video and I guess it could be interpreted as Elston 'launching'.. Other than that, I didn't see anything wrong with it.. He got up underneath the guys chin and that seemed to do the damage.. The WR sure lost interest in the ball when he caught sight of Elston coming for him..

They really need to quit messing with the game, ESPECIALLY the NFL.. They get paid to do this and except the risks.. I mean good grief, why don't we just go ahead and remove the pads, put little belts with velcro flags on them and be done with it.. We could have the NFFL, NCAAFFB and so on........
