His column is about 5 times that the Tennessee men's basketball team have had a chance to earn their first Final Four berth.

From 1967 to 2019.

From the Ray Mears era to Rick Barnes in 2019.

Very interesting article and read.

I can’t revisit our past tournament heartbreaks. I’ve never been able to do much as watch highlights from previous tournaments, esp 2000, 07,2019. Those were the most painful for me.

The Vols may have struggled lately, but some of that has to do with their opponents playing their hearts out to beat the Vols. When the other team thinks you are one of the best, they play harder. Its human nature.

And, I don't think for a single second that the Vols are going to go down easily to ANY team in the NCAAT. Not Duke, not Purdue, and especially not a Sun Belt team.

If they want it bad enough, they can beat anybody.
But in some sports, like golf or basketball, the "want it bad enough" occurs in the off-season, not in the midst of The Masters or March Madness.

Even in man-to-man defense, there's such a need for communication and flexibility that it's tough to channel all that desire to produce a good result.

No getting around it: we're limping into the starter's gate. But no matter how well or poorly our guys play Thursday night, I will KNOW they gave their all for Tennessee. It's just the nature of basketball that "giving your all" won't necessarily be perceivable from the vantage of the mezzanine or sofa.

This is a great post! You’re right we are limping in literally, with tough losses, nagging injuries, and long term ones. Chemistry is off just a touch and it’s cost the guys several winnable games. BUT…. This team is as tough as we’ve seen. Plus the guys all seem very nice, smart, with diverse backgrounds, and are fantastic representatives of VOLS basketball. They are easy to root for and I’m proud of them regardless of what happens… Let’s not forget they have beaten Texas, Alabama, Kansas, and technically Gonzaga! All in the same year! GO VOLS!!!

Drove to St. Louis to watch Tennessee win their first ever Sweet 16 game against Ohio State. I was one of two Orange fans in the Ohio State section…had such a great time I drove back up 2 days later to watch the heartbreaking loss to Michigan State. I will never forget Scottie Hopson missing that free throw.

No doubt this early season team would have a better shot at advancing than the current team. Don’t think it will be from skill, lack of effort, or even injuries. I just saw a team in the last 1/3 of the season that looks a little tired. They were a step slow getting to the 3 pt shooters, and there legs seemed weary on their jump shots. Hoping the early exit from the SEC tournament will give them some much needed rest.

Playing together as a team, communication , being able to hit jump shots , all those things you expect to get better at as the season goes on. When you have injuries, next man up? I hope they go deep in the play offs, but their last 8 or so games doesn't give you much to feel confident about.

A lady in (avatar) sequins always evokes serious consideration from the transient rabble.
Lol. My avatar used to actually sparkle like the cheerleaders uniforms back in the day. But for some reason or other, animated avatars were no longer allowed to animate.
