Simple question and just want some opinions. Why do people buy milk and bread when it snows? Seems like there is much better options to me.

Well, as for myself, I live in an area that has a steep entry/exit. Milk and bread probably is the most replenished items in any household. So, when it's gonna snow, I'd rather traverse a non-slick driveway for replenishment.

Plus, I do not want to be on the roads during snow/ice events with all the others. I like my chances better on dry pavement.

The practice seems to stem from all the way back in 1976 when Hurricane Belle hit New England, add to that the blizzard of 1978 that also hit New England.
It's kind of ironic because in a survival scenario milk and bread are two of the most parishable food items in terms of shelf life especially in cases of power outages with regard to the milk. You're better off stocking up on just about any other type of food, especially foods you actually eat on a daily basis.

It's not about long term, it's the exact opposite. The majority of people of who do this are in the south where snow doesn't last long. Milk and bread are perishable items and tend to be consumed rather quick by most people. The thought that you won't be able to replenish these items for 2-3 days because of weather is the reason why. If you can easily go out and get your sandwich bread for tomorrow, there's no need to stock up. I'm sure if report were that the snow was a blizzard that was going to last for a long time, people would buy non-perishable items.

Because people are idiots........especially in the south where the roads are a problem for about 12-48 hours, hardly long enough to panic that you wont have food to live.

When I hear about snow or any other weather condition that would keep me from getting out, I stock up on beer, vodka, steaks, chops, and charcoal. They can have the milk & bread!

Its amazing his many people can't figure that out

Yep. I don't think people realize that most families literally fly through bread and milk on a regular basis. Take away power and sandwiches and cereal become staples.

mmmm. cereal. Sometimes eating healthy is hard. mmm. cereal.
