A 15-year-old Millington Central High School football player died Tuesday after being injured in practice.
The player has been identified as Dana Payne, a 5-foot-11, 143-pound sophomore, who played wide receiver and defensive back for the Trojans.
Shelby County Schools Supt. John Aitken got word during a meeting of the Unified School Board that the player had been pronounced dead at Le Bonheur Childrens Hospital.
Memphis City Schools Supt. Kriner Cash asked members of the board to observe a moment of silence in honor of the fallen player. As Aitken and other members of the SCS management team rushed out of the meeting room at the Memphis Teaching and Learning Academy, Commissioner Stephanie Gatewood suggested adjourning the meeting, and Chairman Billy Orgel agreed that would be appropriate under the circumstances.
According to family friend Frank Sharp, who drove Payne to practice today and watched practice, Payne suffered a "normal football blow."
