Sources: Mississippi State hires Florida coordinator as coach

Mississippi State will hire Florida offensive coordinator Dan Mullen to be its next head football coach, ESPN.com has learned from sources close to the search.

An announcement is expected later today. Terms of the deal are not known.

Mullen fits the profile Mississippi State was searching for: a high-energy personality, a strong recruiter and an offensive background. In addition, Mullen knows the SEC after four years working with Urban Meyer in Gainesville -- something that gave him an advantage over another high-profile offensive coordinator interviewed for the job, Oklahoma's Kevin Wilson.

It is unclear whether Mullen will stay with Florida through the FedEx BCS National Championship Game against Oklahoma, a source said.

Prior to coming to Florida, Mullen was Meyer's quarterbacks coach at Utah, where he worked with eventual No. 1 NFL draft pick Alex Smith. At Florida he tutored Chris Leak during the Gators' 2006 national championship campaign and also helped coach Tim Tebow to the 2007 Heisman Trophy and a likely spot as a Heisman finalist this season.

NC or VictoryVille - Did you see this coming???

Big mistake for him in my opinion. I think he could get a better job. It may have been next year, but it would be better than MSU.

Good. I like anything that'll shake things up in Gainesville.

If Tebow doesn't come back (doubt he leaves) it will have a major impact. If Tebow is back they should still be just fine, Urban will have no problem getting a very good OC.

I have an MSU buddy who was afraid they were going to hire Tubberville. He is very pleased by this.

I don't see him being able to stay at UF through the NC game. It seems I recall a team in 1998 that lost the OC and still won the NC though. It will also be interesting to see if this has any effect on Tebow's decision regarding the NFL.

I agree that any changes to the UF staff can only be a positive thing for the rest of the SEC.

he'd prefer an unproven OC for a coach who gets the primary credit for the offense to a proven SEC head coach? this might be a great hire, it might be a bad one. either way it's a big roll of the dice. i would not be excited if i was a MSU fan. speaks of desperation.

Mullen has had his name thrown around quite a bit as a head coaching candidate.

He's been with Urban for a long time too.

It's not flashy but it could be great in the long run

I agree. A proven OC is about as good as MSU could expect to bring in at this point. No matter how long they searched they weren't going to get real interest from anyone better.

I think its a good hire for them and they have a pretty decent recruiting class this year. If they are able to hold on to those guys they may be able to turn it around with a new voice at the helm.

i'm aware, but the fact is this isn't mullen's offense and we were comparing him to an established coach. the MSU fans better hope this isn't buddy teevens 2.0.

This puts some one else in the hunt for an OC unless the gators hire from within, do you think this hurts The Kiffinator on putting his staff together?

Considering that we run completely different offenses, no.
