Mizzou coaching search

Both of my parents went to Mizzou (along with a ton of people in my extended family), so I’ll always have a soft spot for the university. It’s been sad seeing their basketball program struggle, because they are typically competitive every season with some really strong years mixed in—not too dissimilar from our program, actually.

I want them to be good again. More good teams in the SEC will help us all.

The wrestling team is good - won the big 12 tourney!

Has it really gotten that bad? Mizzou was a quality basketball program for a lot of years.
Ever since they left the Big 12 they have been pretty bad. They had a nice little run from 2008-2012 but other than that they have not been good in a long time. They have finished 12th or worse in the SEC 5 times and never finished better than 4th since joining the SEC.

Mizzou was a good basketball program for a long time in late 70's through 90's. They have solid recruiting bases from KC and STL. I think it can be a good program again with the right leadership.

They’re AD absolutely will not spend money on basketball. They don’t have good fan support and they don’t have the resources.
Living in MO... their support is better for basketball when they're competitive than it is for football. I'm not sure what the AD will or won't spend. I used to work for one of their elite donors. They have money if they want to spend it. That particular donor was a roommate to Norm Stewart and wants to see Mizzou excel in basketball above any other sport.

Mizzou and UT are similar in size. Mizzou has willing donors but their AD hasn't inspired confidence in years.

Here’s a good analysis on spending about halfway through this article. You’re right that the school and donor base are big enough to support a successful program, but the AD treats it like a loss leader. It’s also true that statewide fans quit driving in for games. Might be tough to fix. Loved Norm Stewart era.

Taking Stock: What should we make of Mizzou as it nears a coaching crossroads?

Their attendance rivals Miss St and Georgia for worst in the league

An honest question, wont any team that is winning draw a crowd, even at Georgia and Miss St? The 1990's were a bad time for TN men's basketball and they did not draw much of a crowd, to the point where they had to cover the seats in the upper deck. After success under Pearl people starting coming to the games. Don't you think a good coach could build something, start winning games and get crowds to come to the games? This would, of course, take an investment from the athletic department, which maybe Georgia and Miss St just are not willing to do.

Fans in Missouri have options. That hurts Mizzou athletics when they aren't good. From April to October they have the Cardinals... and a few masochistic Royals fans. From September to January they have the Chiefs. Mizzou teams have to be successful to compete for $$$ and fan interest. When their teams are competitive, fans show up.... just like most schools.

They had a few years of relative success in football which justified a significant stadium expansion. I believe the last two coaches were fired more because of attendance than anything specific to the program itself. That was probably a bad investment considering Mizzou's recruiting situation. The lack of school consolidation and the organization of HS sports contributes to very little talent being produced in state. Basketball for everyone depends a lot more on national recruiting so it isn't the same impact.

Mizzou basketball has that window of opportunity though. KC and STL are an easy drive to Columbia. Springfield isn't difficult. Mizzou just has to give people a reason to make the trip.
