Today, LSU made Blake Baker. Mizzou's DC, the highest paid DC In college football because of the defensive turnaround at Mizzou in 2 years.

Baker was praised for statistically rebuilding the Mizzou defense from being the worse in college football to being top 25 (scoring D). Baker is being praised because in college football, drastic improvements like this in such a short time, aren't easy nor common.

As of today, we have a DC that has actually statistically accomplished more than Baker, yet some of our fanbase wants him fired.

Against mass exodus on defense, depleted depth, sanctions looming, and working along side Coach Heupel's fast paced offense, Coach Banks has been able to drastically statistically improve the defense in almost every category, so the over the top level of vitriol, disrespect and hate he receives is hard to understand.

And please don't ask if I watched the uSC game because last I checked, Tennessee scored 66 on Mizzou when Baker was DC.

What's the difference in these 2 coached and what each has accomplished? In what world do we live in where we praise one Coach for accomplishing a defensive turnaround and fire the other for accomplishing the same thing even under more challenging circumstances?

Asking for a friend.

We're fortunate that LSU didn't know the statistics and come after Banks. Dodged a bullet there.

He wasn't even the Broyles award winner. That went to Phil Parker - Defensive Coordinator - Iowa. I guess they gave that out before the bowl game! 🤣
Well, LSU overpaid, IMO, for Kelly. It's apparently what their admins do these days.

The "don't call it the SEC West" is going to be more Wild West than I think we can imagine with TX, LSU, OU, and Ole Miss spending money like Shaq on his first NBA contract.

I swear...the Princeton water polo coach could get fired and someone on vn would find a way to turn it into a lecture for the rest of vn.

Smart move by LSU and a big loss for Missouri.

Let’s see. In 2021, before Baker, Missouri was
13th in the SEC in total defense
14th in the SEC in rushing defense
6th in the SEC in passing defense
13th in SEC in PPG

In 2022 they were:
4th in the SEC in total defense
4th in SEC in rush defense
7th in SEC in pass defense
9th in SEC in PPG

In 2023:
4th in SEC in total defense
6th in rush defense
8th in SEC pass defense
6th in SEC in PPG

In 2021 under Banks we were:
11th in the SEC in total defense
8th in the SEC in rush defense
13th in the SEC in pass defense
12th in the SEC in PPG

In 2022:
11th in the SEC in total defense
2nd in SEC in rush defense
13th in SEC in pass defense
2nd in SEC in PPG

In 2023:
5th in total defense
2nd in SEC in rush defense
10th in SEC in pass defense
5th in PPG in SEC

So has Banks really been better than Baker?

No longer the West vs the East.

Players don’t deserve anything close to that
I hope you understand you're not disagreeing with me but with the reality of the market. Some players are, apparently, worth that to some collectives.

By no means all or most players, but then again $2.5M for a DC isn't common either.

And he will always be an afterthought to Kellys offense. His ego won’t let defense outshine it.
I don't think Kelly shows a bias to that side of the ball. He's been an HC for most of his career, but when he was an assistant it was always on the defensive side of the ball, and he was an LB when he played. At ND, it seemed like he always had solid defenses.

So has Banks really been better than Baker?

I was speaking of the defensive turnaround. In 2023, in the SEC, we were:

3rd in total defense
2nd in rush defense
3rd in ppg
2nd in ypp
3rd in pass efficiency D

Considering Banks started with no depth on defense, not a full roster, sanctions that affected recruiting and coaching along side of fast paced offense, yes, the defensive turnaround at Tennessee was better than that at Mizzou. And I'm comparing turnaround and not coaches.

in points? Absolutely. Even Banks down year this year was better than Baker's best, also this year. points is really the only metric that matters. you don't lose games to yards or TOS

2nd in rush defense two years in a row, and 2nd in scoring is better than any individual rank Baker had.

turnovers would be my second most important stat, before any yardage. then sacks/tfls. lastly yards, yards are a throw away number, I have seen plenty of teams gain more yards and still lose. never seen a team hold the other team to fewer points than they scored and lose.

I think TOP factors in here and we seem to overlook it.

In another thread (can't find it now) someone did a great breakdown of defensive statistics in "points allowed per minute" the defense is on the field to account for the amount of time the defense is on the field in this offensive system. There wasn't a ranking for the whole SEC but we were better than UGA, which would indicate in any other system where TOP is more even Banks would be at or near top in the SEC.

Given what his defense is asked to do week in and week out he really isn't that bad. My chief complaint is the third down conversions allowed, nothing is more frustrating to watch than a defense giving up 3rd and 8+ over and over again.

MLB managers have little work to do for 5 months out of the year. College coaches in all sports work year round with recruiting, fall/spring practice, camps, portal/roster management etc. Considering the workload between the two, it’s understandable why college coaches make more.
