Mizzou's Run Defense - Overrated

We move the ball on them, but those big fast WRs worry me if they can catch the ball.

DGB was dropping balls like crazy Saturday. Cam Sutton and Coleman are going to lock it down anyway.

DGB's nickname is going to be "THE GOVERNMENT', cause he's getting shutdown for 2 weeks!

( I made that up a few weeks ago for Georgia when we beat them but it didn't happen. The G on their helmet stands for "government' cause they got shutdown". ) I have been waiting to use that joke.

We all know they will stack the line of scrimmage with 8 in the box and force Dobbs to beat them with his arm. Hopefully our receivers hold onto the ball and the short passing game is effective enough to open up some holes for the running backs. GO VOLS!!!

Ok, so what's you're point?

My point would be that to run against them effectively you line up and run the old fashioned off tackle play.

But the biggest thing you do when teams slant and stunt as much as this one is use their own movement against them. RB has to be patient and OL's have to finish their blocks very aggressively.

So are you saying that counters, misdirection, and draws are the way to go?

No. Not necessarily. The OL's just have to get on their blocks then ride them out. If they slant to the designed hole then ride them all the way across it. If they slant away from the hole then ride them out. RB has to be patient enough to let it open up.

OP - "Their D-Line is OVERRATED bc their stats are messed up because they get sacks ALL THE TIME"

I have long advocated that the NCAA should adopt the NFL policy of recording sacks as lost yardage which should be credited against team passing yardage, rather than the current practice of deducting it from quarterback rushing yardage. After all, most sacks do not occur on designed quarterback runs.

BTW, the way you frustrate a stunting DL is to beat the post man. From what I remember, Mizzou's DT's almost always push out with the DE's looping/twisting over the top when they run DL stunts. The OG's MUST attack and defeat that post man. The DE can run himself out of the play very easily if you make sure that DT either cannot push out or has to give ground to get there.

Excellent point. I checked to see what their rushing defense looked like if we excluded the 25 sacks from their rushing totals:

4.4 yards per carry.

That's what they give up on the plays where the opposing team actually intends to run the ball.

Added this stat to the OP as it clarifies the point I'm trying to make.

We can dominate this team on the ground and with the short passing game.
