If you have one of these, this app is a steal at $10. It updates the game status (on a pitch by pitch basis), box scores, etc. on an amazingly close to real-time basis. You get video highlights within minutes of when a big play happens. But the thing that pushes it over into must-have status for me is that you can stream the radio broadcast for any game, with either team's announcers. And it works over the cell phone data network as well as wifi. What this means is that my days of looking through the radio dial for the game when I'm out of town are over. Anywhere I can get a cell signal, I can just plug my phone into the car stereo and listen to the game. Or any other game, if the Braves aren't on or another game is more compelling.

Well worth the ten bucks.

The games are going to be rolled out slowly -- i.e., only two games today are going to be streamed, with more coming later. Apparently they're also holding open the option of charging for individual games within the app later in the season. So we'll have to see how it develops.

Still, this app has been invaluable -- just for the radio if nothing else. The days of sitting out in the car for 10 minutes, waiting on the end of an inning with runners on base, are over. Plug in the headphones, fire it up, and go on into the grocery store without missing anything.

Watching the first game (Cubs vs White Sox) on my phone now. The picture (on wifi) is decent but not great, making me wonder whether it would be watchable at all under 3G. I'll be curious to see what kind of pricing structure they end up with -- I would probably not sign up for some kind of a monthly fee in order to see this, but I can easily see myself spending 99 cents to watch the odd game here and there. (E.g.: at the bar, and they won't put the game you want on? Buy the game for a buck and prop the phone up on the bar in front of you.)

Obviously if they leave it free once you've bought the app, then I'm perfectly fine with that too...
