Nah. It's really Frank Gore, David Akers and the defense. Alex Smith has had a mediocre year at best, the rest of the team is legit.

Perhaps, but he is still the QB and face of the team. If you had told me last year that he would be 11-3 as a starter and have the 49ers in the playoffs I'd call you crazy. Wouldn't it be sweet revenge for him if he beat Aaron Rodgers in the playoffs?

It would.

But just like Trent Dilfer was not the reason the Ravens won the super bowl, Alex Smith is not the reason the Niners are winning. You heard it on the broadcast, they have the worst red zone offense in the NFL. Alex Smith ranks 24th out of the 34 QB's who have taken enough snaps to qualify for QBR this season. Niners could make it to the Super Bowl, would not signify he's a good QB.

Honestly, I think Harbaugh is kinda holding Alex Smith back. We've seen moments when he can be really good. I'm not saying he's an All-Pro or anything, but I believe there was some truth to Harbaugh saying, "We get too conservative in the redzone."

They're still winning games though, right? They had the one play tonight with the busted coverage on Vernon Davis, but I still don't trust Smith chucking it around in the red zone.

Of their three losses this season, two were against the Cowboys and Ravens when they were in beast mode and IIRC the game against Zona was just bum luck.

Alex Smith is not a great QB but he is not making the key mistakes this year and he steps up and makes the throws when we need him to. Clearly this team is riding the defense and that can be enought to take them a long way. It worked for Dilfer with the Ravens and Brad Johnson with the Bucs
