With the estimated 6 million that the rumor mill has been quoted for Jon Gruden the Vols should be able to pluck anyone from the NCAA coaching tree and the some from the NFL. Heck Andy Reid only brings in about 5.5 million a year. Mike Tomlin brings in close to 5.8 million. Tennessee should have no problem finding a coach "NFL or NCAA" that could dominate college football for decades.

Sounds like giving to total control is the issue, which any top-tier coach will demand.

If the total control is the issue from the ink on the paper then dave hart needs to seriously be worried about his job. Its jon gruden, he would recruit like a monster and he knows his x's and o's better than arguably anyone in the country.

This. Why would you even limit control with a Gruden type hire? When you hire an 'elite' coach and pay 5-6 mil. he should have complete control. You don't pay for a top coach and handcuff him from the get go.

As someone already asked, what are the issues regarding control? I mean obviously he would get to negotiate and hire his own staff. He will have his own playbooks. He is limited by the NCAA regs as they apply (recruiting, practice hours, number of coaches, etc.). So what are the control issues? The only thing I can think of is maybe he doesn't want to do any effing "hopper" commercials.

What exactly is total control ... I thought all the big coaches had total control over their teams.

I think alot of people speak about this "total control" and probably have no idea who has it IF any college/pro coach does. People claim Saban does. Noone knows for sure what he can and can not do at Bama. Can Saban fire the AD? Something tells me he can not. Can he fire the volleyball coach? I doubt it. Could Saban fire a RB coach without going through the AD and proper channels? I doubt it. If the AD allowed that, they would be setting themselves up for possible law suits for any number of reasosns. As the football coach of a college, you have to answer to someone. You work for the AD. I think the idea of "total control" is something NO coach has. JMO

They want total control of the football program not the AD.

Of course he's not able to fire the volleyball coach or the AD. That's absurd.

It basically means the AD can't come in and micro manage the program or hire/fire assistants.

I never understood this either. Maybe he wants control over the math department? I think it's a just a term people use when a deal isn't made and its blamed on the "mysterious totoal control". When the real issue is just money.

I understand what it means. My examples were out there as it is a very open ended idea "total control". Here is a good example. Most feel UT would not hire Bobby Petrino. What if Gruden were given "total control" and he hired Petrino anyway as his OC for 1.5 million a year? Hart could do nothing about it right? He can not micro manage. This is where I see problems with a football coach who does not have to answer to his boss, the AD.

Budget comes into play there which would be crossing over in the AD's area.

I know where you're coming from though. Pretty vague. I'm sure it's not vague on the contract, however.

I think Hart covered that "rumor" in his press conference. He does not hire assistants. That is for the head coach to do. Hart did not hire Sal Sunseri. Derek Dooley did.

I do thnk if Hart did not like the candidate, he should be able to axe it. He is in charge of the AD.

Total control most likely involves admission of student athletes and control over their studies. No college coach in America has total control over admissions. However, lots of coaches do have contol over the study center (Thornton Center) while the UT coach does not.
