so u think we are gonna go 8-12 the rest of the season? i dont see that. we can play with anyone in the sec. we played close to everyone last year. we will finish above .500 and sneak into the big dance.

how do you know we can play in the SEC? We've only played 2 good teams, and lost to one of them, and those teams are turning out to not be as good as everyone thought. We have no idea how the SEC schedule will go. We started 9-1 with one of Buzz's teams and finished 16-15 and didnt make the tourney and got eliminated in the 1st round of the NIT.

Yeah, but Buzz isn't our coach anymore. Go look at the stats and you will see how every player has improved under Pearl. I'm not saying we're world beaters right now because we're not. I'm just saying that our chances for some upsets are greater than they were under Buzz.

The main thing is, our basketball program seems to be moving in the right direction and I'm content with that.

A few things have me optimistic:

1) the style of play allows us to stay with teams that out talent us.

2) the SEC doesn't look that tough this year - as the bracket shows, only UK, us, Vandy, LSU and Georgia (I think) are predicted in at this point. Teams that were supposed to be very good (e.g. Bama) are struggling.

3) I'd bet we can at least hit .500 in the league

If we were in the SEC West, things would be easier. As it is, we've got 6 games to play with Vandy, Kentucky and Florida, and the most likely scenario to me is that we go 1-5 or 2-4 in those six games. Vandy is a good team, and they are BIG, which certainly means we don't match up well against them. Florida is unbeaten and a Top Ten team. Kentucky is struggling, granted, but they always get it in gear for the SEC schedule. Talent-wise, they're better than anyone in the conference except possibly Florida.

As it stands now, assuming (which is assuming quite a bit, actually) that we get by South Alabama, we're 9-1 going into conference play. Also assuming a loss at Memphis in a couple of weeks, that's 9-2. 8-8 in the conference puts us at 17-10 going into the SEC tournament (why are we playing so few games this year? 27 scheduled games seems a little light to me. Florida has already played 12 or 13 games.)

Going 1-1 in the SEC tournament means 18-11, and that ought to get us in. Barely, but in. 8-8 in the SEC won't be that easy, though... if we go 2-4 against Vandy/UK/Florida, that means we've gotta go 6-4 against the rest of the league to get to .500.

i dont really believe that dtv. i think we matchup well with bigger teams. we matched up just fine against texas. we use our athleticism to counter size. we struggle against other athletic teams that have size though. i think we take at least 1 from vandy, and maybe even 2. itll be tough to beat florida because of all their athletes so im not looking for a win there. i think we can and will beat uk at least once. they have plenty of size, but all of them are 7 foot and clumsy. we will use our quickness to get easy baskets. as for the west, im not really impressed by any of them and think we could end up with a 6-0 record against the west. i dont expect it, but its possible. a 5-1 or 4-2 record wouldnt be a stretch though.

on a note about the bracketology site, not only are we 1 of 5 sec teams in the tourney, but both vandy and lsu are on the last 4 in list. that means that espn thinks we are in the top 3 sec teams right now, behind uf and uk.

:D I also hope we do well in conf. play. We have to give the coach a couple of years to bring his on players into the system. Playing the sec schedule is a tough grind. I am not sure we have enough players to allow others to rest and we lose games due to this.
Give him time and we will compete with anyone.

The NCAA only allows a 28 game schedule, but tournements only count as one game so thats how alot of teams in end up playing more games than that.

Interesting - I didn't know there was a 28-game max. Actually, come to think of it, this is the first season in quite some time, to my (shaky) memory, that we didn't participate in any sort of pre-conference tournament. (last year, we knocked off Stanford in very impressive fashion in the Maui Invitational to open the season, prompting me to bury Buzz's career once and for all by stating that this was absolutely, positively the year that we go to the Big Dance under Buzz. Thanks to my amazing jinxing abilities, it was all downhill from there.)

Kentucky has been running so hot and cold, you just don't know which team will show up. If Sparks and Rondo heat up and hit open jumpers, they can play with and beat just about anybody. Other times, they lay enough bricks to build a new arena, and on those nights, UK is very, very beatable. You're absolutely right, HV, none of their "vaunted" 7-footers can play a lick. They make Major Wingate look like Charles Barkley.
