Do you all think that Coach Chavis will blitz the linebackers more this year with the experienced secondary that we have returning? Also from what has been said this is a pretty quick group of linebackers. I would love to see him blitz those guys the way that he did with Al Wilson and Raynoch Thompson.

Blitzes = big plays . . . . for both the offense and the defense.

Dangerous if all of your DLineman can be blocked without the use of a double-team. Someone on the front four will need to step up to make defensive pressure effective.

Your right about that but I think that our D-line will be pretty solid. I know we lost some good ones but overall I think that the d-line will be pretty effective this year. I really don't see our defense dropping off that much. Now with that being said I would be stupid to believe that it won't drop off some especially at the beginning of the year simply due to the experience that we had at those positions for such a long time.

John Chavis
Associate Head Coach
Defensive Coordinator
Linebackers

I'm really not trying to be a jerk about spelling 3131, it's just I see the "ous" on the end of his name soooo much. :peace:

You guys are more up on our defense than I am, so my question would be...Even if our front lineman can get in enough to draw a double team, can our secondary cover short crossing patterns that will come when the offense realizes a blitz is coming?

p.s.

We all know the wide outs are taught to look for the linebackers going in, and if that happens, to drop off of their regular routes and do curls or mid field crossing patterns...

Teams normally blitz when their secondary is weak, so opposing QB's do not have time to pick apart their secondary. If your secondary is a strength, you normally wouldn't need to blitz very often.

Florida played a lot of man last year against UT, to focus on shutting down the running game. IF UT doesnt have a good pass rush, Chavis may blitz more to get more pressure, but will probably focus more on stopping other teams running game.

In the past, UT has had years with returning starters in the secondary, and they ended up playing at the level they played the year before. They don't seem to develop the way players have on the DL and at LB. Coaching in this area has been suspect.

Since 98 hasn't had a secondary that could shut down another team's passing game. Even that year, the LB's blitzing seemed to be the difference.

I'm not on the UT secondary bandwagon. UT had the no. 1 pass rush in the nation last year, and still gave up lots of passing yards to Notre Dame, LSU, and ahem, Vandy.

That said, I'm more concerned about teams running the ball against the young DL and LB's.

oklavol- I disagree with you a bit. MOST D-Coordinators use a strong Defensive backfield, to enable their defense the chance to blitz from the LB possition.

That being said, I'm with you on not being sold. Everyone talks about how good they are and how Antwan Stewart is an anchor back there, yet everytime I see him on the field, I cringe. I dunno what it is about him, but I'm not comfortable when he is in the game. I hope he proves me wrong and becomes Jason Allen back there, but if not, I hope they pull him and put my boy D Mo in.

I would like to see them blitz more with an experienced secondary. Their aggressiveness on D has certainly tailed off in the past few years.

If you blitz and its a running play some of the LB's are probably out of position to make a play. If your rush defense is alreay suspect, it can be a big play.

I think teams like to blitz when they have experienced LB's who can still adjust and make plays when on a blitz the play call is instead a screen or a draw.

I agree with you though, that D Morley needs to start instead of Antwan Stewart at safety. That move could have been made at the end of last year. I still remember Stewart getting burned against Auburn, when J. Allen bacome the starter at cb.

Blitzing also depends heavily on the speed and the first step of the LBs. Even though I enjoyed watching Simon, Burnett, and Gaither play, their first steps and latteral speed did not seem up to par with more recent greats in the program. Maybe McCoy is the answer.
