Mark Souder.

Republican Congressman.

Evangelical Christian.

Resigning from Congress because of an affair with a staffer.

At least he has the good sense to quit when he gets caught. I'll give him that.

what does having an affair have to do with his religious beliefs? people are human, they make mistakes. Christians are not perfect.

Thank you for your continued unbiased, bipartisan reporting. You are a beacon of fairness that illuminates us all with your even-handed observations.

At least he resigned. If it was a Dem, Congress would give him a standing ovation for sticking it out.

Republicans claim to be the party of family values and this hurts that image. We will be better off as a country when both parties stop trying to legislate morality. Neither side has done a great job in that that department.

Bingo.

My point is that I am tired of the sanctimoniousness of the right wingers. Its not good when anybody in elected office does something like this. But it is particularly annoying when someone who is part of what is by far the more judgmental of the two parties gets caught with his pants down.

yeah because calling for moral superiority is surely more judgmental than calling anyone that disagrees with you a racist.

No one party is more judgmental than the other, perhaps on one particular issue it can appear that way. The left has made their bread and butter looking out for the little guy, all the while making back room deals for family members and backers while blasting republicans for being in bed with big business. Many of these deals can actually hurt the average Joe, forcing him to pay more for services or in taxes.

Politics are full of hypocrisy, using this tiny blip on the radar screen as evidence while overlooking all the other forms either shows you are naive or are lacking an objective view on the issue of hypocrisy.

Yeah, holding people to the positions they take is stupid.

The constant drum beat of self-discipline and restrained sexuality that comes from the right, and particularly the religious right, just rings hollow over and over and over and over and over and over and over.

yeah let's turn our attention to sex scandals involving the other party instead of the one in charge demolishing the US behind closed doors (when the promised to be the most transparent ever). It's like a game of three-card monte with the left

and yes, I realize this post is probably racist

Good thing no one can accuse you of being repetitive, right?

Probably? If you removed that hood every now and again it would be obvious.

Let's see, a guy made a mistake and is taking responsibility for it.

What a hypocrite!

I gave him credit for that.

And I'm not saying there aren't Democrats who similarly get themselves in such trouble.

But this guy was part of the religious wing of the party and, once again, we have a guy who holds himself out as a staunch ally of all things noble and meanwhile he's having an affair.

It is a fact that members of both parties do this kind of thing. It is also, however, a fact that one party is much more sanctimonious about declaring itself the defender of all things proper when they are just as likely to be involved in this (if not more so) than the party who has a wee bit more of a modern approach to such matters.
