Not really an accolade for Pearl-- just another way for Lawgator to boast about the repeat and Billy Donovan. Thanks anyways.

Pearl considered for one of Top Ten coaches... Oh, and who is that at #1?

SI.com - Writers - Head of the class (cont.) - Wednesday April 11, 2007 12:16PM

There is a definite "what have you done for me lately" slant to the article, and I'll pick a bone or two with it.

Listing Donovan first puts too much emphasis on one recruiting class; while he is certainly on the list somewhere, I'd have to list guys that have reached the top multiple times with different players ahead of him. That means Calhoun, K, Williams, Pitino, and maybe Izzo and Boeheim. Argue about them individually if you will, but I think at least someone on that list is more deserving of the top spot at this time than Billy D (and I didn't forget about his other final four, I simply think the other guys have just as good or better resumes spanning different classes.)

I see a similar problem with the listings of JTIII, Billy Gillispie, and even Thad Matta. Billy G has a WAC title and an Elite Eight appearance under his belt; the other two have a single final four appearance. All have done good jobs with their programs thus far, but to name them as tops in the country seems a little premature. Was the guy coaching George Mason on the list last year? Give me Bill Self, Jim Boeheim, Rick Barnes, or the General for my list instead.

You have to consider the writer. He (Mandel) is an idiot.

Stat boy: Billy G made it to the Sweet 16 (not the Elite Eight) before falling to Memphis.
