Dallas City Hall Blog | The Dallas Morning News

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.
County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.
Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.
Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."
That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.
Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."
Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

Watch it and be amazed!

This is stupid. It would be obvious to any level headed person the meaning of that statement in context. The taxpayers of Texas should be outraged that their public officials are wasting time and money arguing the intent and context of this statement.

I can't believe that....my lord. It seemed like the first guy was almost joking when he said "white hole"....I don't know how it got to the point that the chair asked for that ridiculous apology.

I think Commissioner Mayfield was completely out of line. He should emend his comments to read that the central collections office "has become a gravitationally completely collapsed star." :p

Still too offensive..... how about a gravitationally challenged former ball of nuclear driven combustion?

Lost in all of this is that the "white hole" comment was intended to be racist.

That is true. Some Hollywood personality or professional athlete may see the word star and think it's about them.

RIM obviously is a racist company. I cannot in good conscience continue to use my BlackBerry. It goes to the dumpster tonight.
I suggest anyone who uses a BlackJack do the same.

Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical liberal minority and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous liberal press, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

This just in:

The word "icehole" has now been deemed a curse word and can no longer be used in regular conversation.

The guy wasn't joking when he said, "white hole." This is absolutely ridiculous. "Jewing something down" is apparently no more offensive than "black hole." Then, of course, after going on about how careful we should be with what we say he declares that a white hole is something devoid of life.

You know what really grinds my gears, idiots like this guy.
Next time Penn. St. has a white out, I'm going to Happy Valley to protest.
