The idiots in charge nixed an OU-Va Tech Orange Bowl. The teams and their conferences had agreed to let Kansas take the Big XII spot in the Fiesta Bowl, resulting in Numbers 3 and 4 playing in Miami. Both bowls were also on board. The twits running the BCS wouldn't allow the change, despite the fact that the rules of the BCS specifically allow such modifications.

i see Slive decided that the circumstances weren't compelling enough. Wonder how much compelling he needed?

My guess would be that they decided that Kansas/West Virginia would be such a ratings clunker that making the switch would be a net loss. A shame, because I think UK/WVU and OU/VPI would both be better matchups than the two games we have now.

It's not enough that they ruined what used to be the single greatest football day of the year, January 1, and started stringing the games out a whole week. But they can't even get us the best matchups because of office politics? That sucks.

His fear was that everyone would have been screaming for a Plus One involving LSU and the Orange Bowl winner. By leaving it the way they did, they can argue against any changes.

exactly. my sarcasm didn't come off strong enough. If anything, the matchup would have been too compelling.

No, I realized your sarcasm. I was just giving my take on the driving force behind their decision making.

Slive has supposedly been in favor of adding a plus one game starting when the new contract expires. I'll see if I can dig up a link.

Edit: Here's something from the NY Times:
Slive Pushes Plus-One - The Quad - Sports - New York Times Blog

(Of course, that could all be just for-the-cameras PR blather to try to smooth over the inconvenient fact that there's overwhelming support for overhauling the postseason format among everybody except bowl committees and university presidents.)

From what I understand, a plus-1 system is about the biggest change you could ever hope for. Even that is somewhat unrealistic.

I don't see what the big deal is, anyway. Everyone knows the real national champion is whichever school is fortunate enough to have the services of Trooper Taylor.

it's also the same reason why the Rose wouldn't invite GA over Ill.......favoring tradition over any possiblity of a potential +1/playoff type format.....

they're going to avoid those type of matchups to remove speculation about those matchups.

i'm a huge fan of rose bowl tradition, but taking ill over geogia was a horrible decision.

that had two motives....keep the big 10/pac 10 tradition and eliminate any speculation about possible matchups for a 4 team playoff. the rose bowl is a big road block in the process because of the tradition they hold so dear.

as kirk herbstreit said, the parade is more important than the game.

It's not only about tradition. It's about Big10 bowl money pay off. No other way they could get the revenue but to fall back on "tradition". UGA should be playing in the Rose Bowl.

another good point hohen....the big 10 and pac 10 would both have a lot of $$$ to lose if it weren't a requirement that they both play there. and with the addition of the BCS title game, it basically ensures the big 10/pac 10 match up in most years.

If the purpose of the BCS is to pit #1 against #2 (which it does with controversial results,) I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it spends so much time trying to match 8 with 3 instead of 3 with 4, or guaranteeing 10 a spot against 5.

It is unnecessary interference that makes a flawed system even more flawed.

Simple. The only way to keep the original four January 1 bowls on the reservation was to promise them that they'd remain coveted spots.

How coveted is that spot if you are restricted from selecting the teams you want?
