Movies you've seen recently II

Greener Grass 6.5/10 if you are looking for the Stepford Wives on LSD, this might be your ticket. I just laughed at the absurdity of it. Very creepy fun world they create. Worth the ride.

It's definitely weird with some lol moments and some that fall flat. I thought Beck Bennett was pretty good. He had one line that made me laugh when him and his wife are discussing their son after his "transformation" and his wife is talking about how the son is weird now and Bennett goes "He's faster than ever!"

For some reason I loved the bleeding hair. So strange I giggled a lot at it.

Frank 2014 7/10 An aspiring, albeit, struggling songwriter joins a band of misfits fronted by Frank, played by Michael Fassbender, who happens to wear a fake head 24/7. Also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Domhnall Gleeson...different and thought provoking ...I enjoyed it more than cookie cutter Marvel films exploring the back story of the Black Panther's niece's nanny https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1605717/

I remember seeing that...it was straight up oddball but enjoyable for same reason you mentioned.

Got around to The Tomorrow War. Definitely about what I was expecting - pretty silly...Chris Pratt acting like a war guy when all I can see is fat andy...but entertaining too. It was unexpectedly pretty funny, both purposely (Sam Richardson from Veep was a welcome comic relief and Gail the Snail being there made me chuckle), but also the absurdity of so many things kept me laughing the whole way.

I'd say 6/10 if just for the laughs and Alien references.

Begin Again 2013 8/10 Really enjoyed this movie. The first part is shot out of sequence but works really well for the story. Good performances and good music. Keira Knightley Mark Ruffalo Adam Levine James Corden https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1980929/
Sometimes if a movie has a good sound track I’ll watch it or parts of it multiple times when I’m eating lunch or taking a break and don’t have 2 hours for a movie. Probably saw this one 4-5 times total - really liked it. Was surprised that Knightly did her own singing and she was pretty good

Found King Of California 2007 https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0388182/ on Tubi and watched it because I generally like Michael Douglas movies (Falling Down and Wonder Boys are two of my all time faves) Douglas plays recently released mental health patient inspired to find a hidden gold treasure buried under a Costco with the reluctant help of his 17 year older than her years daughter played by Evan Rachel Wood...worse ways to spend 90 minutes 6.5/10

Big Fan 2009 7/10
Huge Giants' fan, played really well by Patton Oswalt, spends his days as a parking lot attendant listening to sports talk and practicing his nightly call in "takes" to the Sports Dogg (played by Scott Ferrall) Very good dramatic role for Oswalt dealing with aftermath of assault at the hands of his favorite player. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt1228953/

The Hunt. Another take on the "hunting humans" trope. This time it's liberals hunting conservative "deplorables." Good time waster with a redemptive ending. A lot of familiar faces: Hillary Swank, Betty Gilpin (she is great as the ass-kicking heroine), Ethan Suplee (from My Name is Earl), Emma Roberts... a few more faces you might find familiar. I would give it a 6/10.

I'd bump it to an 8/10 and I'm a very apolitical person. Just great execution and Gilpin is crazy hot.

Remember when conservatives were scared of this movie?

??? I think it just came out. Are you getting it mixed up with one of the Purge movies?

No, some talking heads got some people scared that this movie was going to spread the message that it was OK to have open season on conservatives, even though it seemed pretty clear from the trailer that the progressive elites were the villains. We had a thread about it.

Haha. That's hilarious! I never knew this. Where the F was I? lol

Cold Souls 2009 Paul Giamatti plays himself as an actor struggling to perform a character in an upcoming Russian play. A New Yorker article about a soul removal/storage service seems to be the remedy for his stage issues. Also stars Oscar nominees Emily Watson and David Straithairn. Good idea for an existential story but it never took off for me...shame I generally like those type stories like Being John Malkovich 6/10

Nope. There was a freak out based on the premise alone.

Interesting. I never saw that thread and I am a better man for it but I thought in the general public that Libs were mad about it also. Anyway, despite it all I found it to be a very fun movie.

The Dark Divide 2020 7/10 True story of lepidopterist Robert Pyle on a 30 day journey to discover new butterfly and moth species in Gifford Pinchot National forest...might be too slow for some but hikers and nature lovers like me should enjoy it. Stars David Cross and Debra Messing in dramatic roles as opposed to their usual comedic movies. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt8356394/
