So, long story short, I decided to go back to school and MTSU was the choice.

As a result, I decided to keep track of their sports. I figured there are some folks here who keep a casual eye on them as well.

Let’s use this thread to discuss the mighty *checks notes* Blue Raiders.

As an alum I follow them somewhat. You’ve picked a bad time. Baseball & men’s basketball are at all time lows and football is very “middle of the road” in a very weak conference. A complete housecleaning from President on down is needed & it doesn’t appear to be happening.

MTSU alum here as well.

And agreed. Losing Kermit Davis was a huge blow, but they kept him longer than could be expected. I'll never forget the Michigan State win and the publicity it brought Liddle Middle.

Rick Stockstill is pitiful, but he gets the team to bowl games most years, so he isn't going anywhere. He also has a massive buyout for some ridiculous reason. There's really no reason to have any optimism whatsoever for Blue Raiders athletics anytime in the near future.

That’s just my luck! Haha.

Looks like the basketball team is building a pretty good roster. I know losing Kermit must have felt like a death blow of sorts.

I’m very interested to see what happens to Stockstill and on top of that, what kind of coach that opening would command. I’d guess guys like Hudspeth and maybe SEC coordinators.

I feel almost exactly the same way.

There is so much talent in the Middle Tennessee area that MTSU should be much better in all sports. It infuriates me to no end. I think talent is there, just a bad batch of current coaches.

Agreed. The brand kinda sucks IMO, which results in less interest from local kids. I've long supported the idea of changing the university's name to "University of Middle Tennessee" and the mascot to just "Raiders." I believe UT has blocked them, or at least strongly doesn't want them to utilize that naming convention, though.

They go out of their way not to recruit Middle Tennessee kids in all sports. Rarely do they sign a football player (maybe 1 or 2 most years), hardly ever a basketball player (1 local kid I know of on the team) & they’re terrible in baseball now yet Middle Tennessee HS baseball talent is off the charts.

Yeah, looking over their recent football and basketball classes, I was stunned by the lack of instate talent. How are they not getting 10 of those guys?

Just the talent in Rutherford County is staggering.

LSU doesn't win the NC this year without that Oakland guy making all the tackles.

Here's how I think the 2020 MTSU football team will do. I think MTSU goes 5-7 and could start thinking about changing their head football coach.

Indiana State W
Virginia Tech L
@Old Dominion W
Western Kentucky L
@Florida Internaional L
North Texas W
@Rice W
Charlotte L
@MARSHALL L

There are some pretty tough teams on that schedule. At least it seems there are teams that are always create headaches for P5 schools.
I just realized I’m getting excited breaking down MTSU’s schedule. I think I might miss football just a little bit.

Also, seeing that schedule makes me wonder how UCONN ever made it to a BCS Bowl and now they are barely D1.

The Big East was a joke when UConn made it to the Fiesta Bowl:D

That game was similar to the 1976 Fiesta Bowl when 8-2-1 OU beat 8-3 Wyoming 41-7:D
You really dusted off the almanac to find that one!😁
That must’ve been before it was the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl and it was the Pace Picante Fiesta Bowl or something .

Wyoming was tied for the Western Athletic Conference Title in 1976 with BYU and the Fiesta Bowl usually back then invited the WAC Champion who was usually Arizona State but they went 4-7 in 1976. In 1975 Arizona State went 10-0-1 and played 8-3 Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl which the Sun Devils won 17-14 over the Cornhuskers.

if memory serves me correctly the reason UConn was in the Fiesta was because they were the best of the worst. Big East was tied into the BCS and guaranteed the conference winner a game in one of their bowl games. It wasnt that Fiesta wanted them, they had to take them

Gotcha. I saw the College Football 150 doc the other day where it discussed how the Fiesta Bowl really became relevant when they got a corporate sponsor and had the Penn State vs Miami game where the “The U” players wore fatigues. It really started the shift towards a true 1 vs 2 game. It was slower than a snails pace, but it moved it in that direction.

Yeah in 1974 a 6-5 Oklahoma State team beat 7-3-1 BYU 16-6 in the Fiesta Bowl:D;) It's funny how the Fiesta Bowl started out with how big it has become:cool:

Probably about right on the record. No way Stock is fired. 6.6M buyout off of a pandemic? Nope. They can’t eat that salary.
