Murtha: Western Pa. 'racist' but Obama should win

PITTSBURGH (AP) - U.S. Rep. John Murtha says his home base of western Pennsylvania is racist and that could reduce Barack Obama's victory margin in the state by 4 percentage points.

The 17-term Democratic congressman tells the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in a story posted Wednesday on its Web site that, as he put it: "There is no question that western Pennsylvania is a racist area."
He says it's taken time for many Pennsylvania voters to come around to liking Obama, but he should still win the state, though not in a runaway. In a separate interview posted Wednesday on the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review's Web site, Murtha says Obama has a problem with the race issue in western Pennsylvania that could shave 4 points off his lead in the state.

Thoughts?

There are racists everywhere. Not sure why Western Pa qualifies as being any more racist than other places. I'd like to see polls that prove his point, instead on anecdotal evidence.

I do agree that Barack is going to beat McCain in Pa, but I don't think it will be close.

Interesting..I wonder if there's a question if Chi-town would be racist towards McCain?

you did catch the fact that it was democrat representative John Murtha speaking about his own constituency?

I don't know which is worse, Murtha's idiocy, or the stupidity of the people of W. PA who've sent him to DC for the last 36 years.

I caught that... and I doubt he cares what the so-called "racists" of Western Pa think since he's an immovable object at this point in his career.

A stupid and unethical comment. But I've done some research on this area, and there is a kernel of truth in the statement, but still...

There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch.

I have not done any research so I may be way off base. Is it because that part of the state is viewed as being racist? Just wondering because a large portion of our southern states have that same reputation, which is kind of odd because from what I have seen in living in other areas that black and white people in the south generally live and work together and get along rather peacefully where other areas of the country seem to largely segregated.

Just pointing out that perception is not always truth.

I've done some research and decided Murtha is a grandstanding buffoon and Obama likes the fact that he can just bill "thoe who can afford it" whether they're racists or not.

I agree totally. My experiences living in the Northeast is that it is way more "racist" (perhaps out of ignorance). It's just way more segregated up there compared to the South. Unfortunaltely, the South has the history, and that narrative has stuck.
