This has been something that I have been wanting to do since NSD and I finally got around to it. Please do not quote the entire article, just copy and paste then put the quotation around it. Feel free to comment and leave thoughts. enjoy...........
1. LB Jerod Askew (6'1'' 230 4.55) 4* on both
A very good LB prospect who should have been a 5* IMO. You can tell how good a player is by his offer list, and this guy had offers from everywhere including Oklahoma, Bama, and Va Tech to name a few. If you watch his videos you will see that he flies around the field laying the wood to opponents. When he hits them he doesnt stop there, he drives his legs and finishes the play. IMO that is very big. Jerod looks very good when he blitzs as he has a natural nose for the ball to go along with his incredible speed. He is physically ready to play in the SEC as you can tell from pics (this guy is built), so that shouldnt be a big factor slowing him down from seeing the field. In HS he reported a 4.7 GPA, so learning Monte's D should not be a problem for him. He will play early and often as a freshman. I believe by the end of the season he will be starting, if not before then.
2. RB Bryce Brown (6'0'' 215 4.37) 5* on both
When we all create our dream running back on video games we are really making Bryce Brown. This kids video is amazing. He will literally run around or over you. Rivals has him in both the best homerun threat and inside runner lists, which is amazing. He is physically ready to play in the SEC as he is 215 pounds. There was plenty of controversy surrounding Bryce during his recruitment, but we have all learned that there is nothing to be scared about. In the Army AA game Bryce showed the world how good he is by getting co-MVP honors (Boyd only got it because he could complete a couple passes to BB) while hauling in 2 recieving TDs and showing us plenty of wiggle while running the ball. He is a unanimous #1 player in america coming out of HS. He will play from day 1 and have a major impact on our offense. Enjoy the time that he is here, because it will only be 3 years.
3. DB Mike Edwards (5'10'' 170 4.55) 3* (Rivals) 4* (Scout)
Mike comes from Glenville HS in Ohio, a school that regularly send talent to Ohio St. and props to Kiffin for getting him. From watching his video it makes me wonder why he is a 3* on rivals. Mike has good ball skills and has excellent hips, which work well for a DB. The only knock on him is his size, but he may be bigger then that now. As stated earlier he comes from the prestigous Glenville HS, so coaching is not a problem. Mike reported a 3.2 GPA so learning the D shouldnt be a problem. I look for Edwards to get special teams time this year as Kiffin gets freshman on the field. Mike will be a good DB for us, it will just be a year or two.
4. DB Eric Gordon (5'10 187 4.4) 4* on both
Gordon was originally thought to be an academic casualty, but reports are that he will make it in. Eric was CLK first big instate to recruit to commit to UT. When watching Eric's film you will notice that he played offense alot, he totalled 19 TDs on O, which means he has good ball skills. When moved to D, he is a beast tho. He bring the wood. He does not shy away from contact at all. Eric was a highly coveted prospect as he had offers from Oklahoma, Bama, and USCw. IMO Eric may need a redshirt year to get adjusted to the SEC, but I look for him to be a very good DB for us. He is one of my favorite signees this year.
5. WR James Green (6'2'' 202 4.55) 4* (Rivals) 3* (Scout)
James was one of Kiffin's first commit when he took over. He is a big physical WR. He doesnt have the greatest speed, but makes up for it by judging the ball well and using his body to block the defender. One thing I really liked about James is that he blocked down feild. The lack of that has cost us big runs in games before. Green looks to have good strength too. He also catches the ball with his hands which helps when he has to adjust to a pass. IMO James will see playing time this year, but not start. He looks to be a solid reciever and one who will contribute for years to come.
6. OL/TE Daniel Hood (6'5'' 260 4.9) 3* on both
We all know the story here so lets move on. Daniel has stated that he is being recruited as a TE, but almost everyone thinks he will make the move to OT. In his videos he shows great feet with a good push to go along with a nasty streak. He also finishes blocks and shows a good motor. At Catholic Hood had a 3.8 GPA so learning the O shoulnt be a problem at all. IMO Daniel will redshirt this year as he needs to get stronger and learn technique as he moves to OT. I think he will be a good player, but just in a few years. Daniel has talent and I am eager to see the coaches develop it.
7. DB Janzen Jackson (6'1'' 185 4.44) 5* (Rivals) 4* (Scout)
One of the storylines of this recruiting class as he signed with us instead of LSU the day after signing day. Jackson has all the tools to be another great DB from UT. In his videos he has good ball skills as he makes some catches some WRs couldnt make. He really brings the wood too. He is a real head hunter and will punish you for coming across the middle. His father is a coach so one should assume he will be ahead of the game in that aspect. The concern I have with Jackson is that he had a major surgury this offseason has he had his knee repaired. He was not able to do any S & C work so he will need some time to catch up. IMO Jackson will start the season as second on the depth chart, but eventually become the starter as the season progresses. This kid will be a stud, no doubt.
8. DT Authur Jeffery (6'4'' 285 4.9) 3* (Rivals) 4* (Scout)
Jeffery is a real sleeper IMO. He could not play his senior year because of an ACL injury. He was very highly regarded as a junior in HS before the injury. If not injured, he would have been one of the top DT in the south. In his Jr video he shows great push and explosion. He also has the awareness to get his hands up and bat some passes to the ground. Jeffery looks to use good technique as he stays low and uses leverage of his legs and arms to power through the opponent and shed them off as well. IMO Jeffery will need a redshirt year to get physically ready for the SEC. When he does get ready look out, he will be force in the middle. If anyone hasnt seen his highlight reel, I highly recommend it. its amazing to be a jr.
9. LB Greg King (6'3'' 210 4.5) 3* on both
This is the biggest sleeper in this whole class IMO. He has all the tools to be a really special player for us. The first thing you will notice in his videos is how fast he is, he covers alot of ground quick. Greg also loves to hit. Physically, he should be ready (he benchs at least 315). His work out partner is Marlon Walls so they push each other. Greg was thought to be a academic loss, but he has gotten everything in order and will qualify. Going to see Greg was one of Monte and coach O's first stops on the recruiting trail, that should tell you how important he was to them. IMO Greg will play special teams and possibly push for PT or a starting role. Watch out, this kid will be special.
10. DB Darren Myles (6'3'' 193 4.49) 4* on both
One of the suprises on signing day, Darren has the opportunity to come in and make an immediate impact in the seconary. Like Jackson, he is the son of a coach so he should be ahead of the game in the mental aspect of the game. Darren has grown throughout this last season, rivals still lists him at 6'1'' 175. In his videos you will see that he tackles very well. I make that out to be because of his father, the coach. With Darren's frame, he looks like he can gain even more weight without loosing any speed. Monte called Darren as soon as he could start recruiting, so he is very highly thought of. IMO Darren will play in the 2 deep to start the season, and might even start before its all said and done.
11. LB Robert Nelson (6'0'' 205 4.59) 3* (Rivals) 2* (Scout)
The feel good story for the Vols in this recruiting class. Robert literally waited on signing day to see if he could become a Vol. Watching his videos, I saw a very athletic LB. He went to the point of attack with an attitude and never backed down. He has a nose for the ball as over the last two season he has accumulated 327 tackles. He also has suprising strength as he benches 350 pounds. In his video he either blitzed or helped against the run, so we dont know how he is in pass coverage. I am really hoping Robert succeeds here. I see him as being a Dorian Davis type of prospect, underrated but talented. I think Robert will play special teams this year and eventually be a nice contributer on defense. Got to root for this kid.
12. RB David Oku (5'10'' 185 4.49) 4* on both
Besides Bryce Brown, this definitely has to be the strangest recruiting story in our class. Nonetheless, he is a Vol. One word can describe David, explosive. He is a home run threat when he gets the ball. Watching his videos, you will see that he has great vision and can pick up the running lanes with ease. He also has a deadly cut back move. He also has my personal favorite play of all the signees, when his helment got ripped off by a defender and he kept on running 30 plus yards while making one defender miss on his way to a TD. Oku and Bryce Brown should make a very nice 1-2 punch in the near future. David should get some PT this fall in the return game and possibly in 3rd down situations. Good looking RB.
13. DB Nyshier Oliver (5'10'' 180 4.4) 3* (Rivals) 4* (Scout)
Oliver recommitted to the Vols after Kiffin took over after being committed with Notre Dame. In his tapes he only plays RB, but everyone projects him to be a DB for us. He could also help in the return game. Playing RB in HS means he will have really good ball skills, which never hurt a DB. Nyshier looks to have great hips, which will help too. I look for Oliver to redshirt this year as he makes the transition for RB to DB. He definitely has talent, he just needs to learn his new position.
14. OL Kevin Revis (6'4'' 275 5.13) 3* on both
A prospect that grew up a huge vol fan. If you read some of Kevin's interviews you will see the passion he has for the orange. Kevin is actually one year younger then everyone in his class, he should be a upcoming senior this year. In his videos you will see a lineman that has a ton of potential. Kevin moves very well for a big guy as he has second to third level speed in run blocking. He finishes blocks very well and is very smart to boot. Kevin was told that he will play center, but with the out flow of lineman recently I see Kevin making the move to guard, a position I think he will thrive at. At guard, the staff could take advantage of his speed as he pulls and traps. In the ideal world, Kevin should redshirt this year as he gets stronger, but with the lack of depth, Kevin will get some PT in the 2 deep.
15. WR Nu'Keese Richardson (5'9'' 170 4.35)
The most heralded signing day surprise for the Vols is a big one. Speed is the name of Nuke's game. Once he gets past you, he is gone. This could be the explosive WR that the Vols have been lacking since Meachum left. In his videos you obviously see his speed, but more things stick out as well. The is very elusive. He has that "wiggle" that is very hard to find in WRs. Nuke will almost certainly help in the return game. The combination of speed and elusiveness should make him the dangerous return man that the Vols need. The only knock on Nuke is that he will have a difficult time beating jams at the LOS, but unless teams have someone helping over the top Nuke should not it because he will out run you after the jam. Nuke should have the second most impact on our offense this year (Bryce Brown), and give our team a decent deep threat every time he touches the ball.
16. WR Zach Rogers (6'2'' 170 4.47) 3* on both
One of the few commitments that never weivered during the coaching change. He is the younger brother of Austin. Many times the younger brothers tend to be better then the older ones, and that appears to be the case here. He is another speed demon. I mean he can flat out fly. I remember watching him in the East vs. West TN all star game, and he was running by the best CBs in the state. Zach reports an impressive 33 in vertical and that should help him on jump balls. I am hoping that Zach is hitting the weights hard this offseason as he will need to bulk up before he can play in the SEC. As of now, I think Zach will help in the return game and possibly get into the WR rotation because of his speed. I would not be surprised to see him redshirt too.
17. OL JerQuari Schofield (6'6'' 298 N/A) 4* (Rivals) 3* (Scout)
The only other OL that the staff signed this year, and it was a good one. JerQuari was very important to this staff as Coach Cregg said he was the top OL on their board. JerQuari has tremendous upside. He has the longest wingspan recoreded at UT in some time. In his Jr videos (the only ones of him on the OL), he is a beast. He looks very good as he run blocks and dominates anyone who lines up against him, now keep in mind this was his junior year. He shows very good mobility and he has a high motor. On pass blocking he looked very solid too. He never gave up on his block, even if it seemed to go to the other side of the field. IMO JerQuari will be forced to play this year. He will most likely break the 2 deep at the tackle spot. Ideally the staff would prolly like to have him redshirt, but with the lack of OL depth that wont be possible.
18. WR/DB Marsalis Teague (5'10'' 180 4.5) 4* on both
The first surprise get on signing day for the Vols. Teague is a football player. Any position you put him (except line) he will be very productive at. In watching his videos you will see how much of a play maker Teague really is. Apparently Teague has football speed, as he looks alot faster then a 4.5 40 on the film. He makes defenders look slow and foolish. Many people project that Marsalis will start at the WR position, and I must agree. UT is in need for playmakers, and Teague is one. IMO Teague will get PT this fall in the return game and may possibly break into the WR rotation later in the season. Teague will be a very good contributer for the vols before he leaves Knoxville.
19. DT Marlon Walls (6'5'' 275 N/A) 4* on both
This guy is all orange. If you read some quotes from his last article, you will see what I am talking about. He is also a freak of nature. He has been working out with Greg King to keep in shape, and those two have been pushing each other. Marlon was clocked in the 4.55 40 range when he came out of HS, but he has added 50 pounds since then so we cant tell what it is now. In the video on Rivals he doesnt look to have lost alot of speed. In the video from the recruiting celebration, you can see the explosion that Marlon has. He was in the backfield alot and disrupted plays alot. Marlon is one of my favorite signees of this past year and I look for him to have an impact similar to the one Montori Hughes is having now. I am very excited to have a player like Marlon on the team that bleeds orange like this. Marlon should be a fan favorite and I expect many big things from him.
Note: I did not do the three early enrolles because we have already seen what kinda player they are now.
1. LB Jerod Askew (6'1'' 230 4.55) 4* on both
