My concern

Did the Vols play a smothering defense again. They impress the heck out of me with that!

What worries me is what happens when the shots just won't fall? Will there be some1 on the bench that can come in and ignite....in a single elimination tourney?....what then

i think yall are overlooking the fact that our talent isnt as good as some other teams in the sec. it is just that coach pearl is squeezing everything he can from these guys.
my concern is that eventually the lemon is gonna be squeezed dry.

Attacking the 1-3-1 Zone Defense

http://www.coachesclipboard.net/Beat131Zone.html

This defense wouldnt be very hard to beat if you put Lofton in the corner and let him run the baseline like they suggest. Lofton runs the baseline and is alway on the ball-side corner. You have Patterson, and Wingate on opposite sides of the lane. Whichever post play is on the ball side can rotate up and the far side post player can go back door.

Actually this would be even better way to beat it.

Have CJ bring the ball up on the right side, when they come up to trap, he throws into the right corner to Bradshaw. When the defense shifts to him, Bradshaw hrows across the court to Lofton on the left wing for an open 3.

This defense isn't much at all.

I think the bottom line is that whatever defense our opponents throw at us we are always going to be better playing a frenetic brand of basketball vs. having to run halfcourt sets. The longer we let the shot clock run down, the worse we are.

Well the 1-3-1 does allow you to put a lot of pressure on the arc/wing. You can trap there. But if you rotate the ball into the corner opposite Lofton, when the defense shifts over, you can throw the ball over the defense back to Lofton for an open 3. The other option is to have Lofton run the baseline and rotate the ball over to him for an open 3 in the corner. This defense doesn't really impress.

Get Jajuan in the corner, kid doesn't miss from the wing. Lofton is pretty dead eye out there too... BTW, Lofton is almost NEVER at the top of the key.

Can't shoot threesall night though. Someone has to cut up the baseline, or drive and get a good pass to someone else under/driving to the basket.

Let's not forget that this is probably the best talent CBP has ever had to work with. He's done some pretty good things with far less. He knows what the Vols are likely to see from teams in the future. The team has bought into the system and will follow his leadership. This team not only wants to win, they crave the win. It has to be a lot more fun being a Vols Hoopster these days!

Well, you have to have great players to win. Yes, Lofton has stepped it up this week, but looking back during this streak, he's not the only guy who's had great games.

Great players do carry their teams, but great teams find ways to win. This team is doing that right now.

Patience Grasshoppers! Yes the 1-3-1 gave us some trouble, however I would rather see it now and let our Great Coaching Staff deal with it, than to get into the Tournaments and see it then. I think we will have success against it now that we see what our weaknesses are. I think this Great Coaching Staff can handle most things that will be thrown at them.

At the first of the season most of us including myself were perfectly fine with a 50/50 season and maybe a trip to the NIT. Lets not loose focus and lets not forget what a great job these players and coaches have done. So once again, Patience Grasshoppers, Coach Pearl will get the job done.

In listening to the game on the radio yesterday - the problem seemed to be turnovers. It wasn't that CJ, JuJuan, etc. weren't scoring points - they didn't even get shots because they kept throwing it away. Lofton was one of the few players that got shots and he didn't get very many.

Fix the turnovers first.

The first 2 plays shown have the ball being dumped to the outside baseline. It seemed that when we did that, UGA put a quick trap on the player and we either turned it over or had to call a time-out.

Well in theory, your suppose to throw the ball over the defense to the wing on the other side for an open 3 point shot. I'm assuming this was to dangerous a pass to make or UT was afraid it was.

The other option is, you put your best shooter running the baseline when the ball rotates over to him in the corner he has an open 3, before the defense gets over to trap.

Another option is you put Major and Patterson both in the low post. When the ball rotates to the corner, the nearside post player, Major rotates to the high post, and Patterson rotates to the near side low post. As he is making his move he is open for a layup as he goes to the nearside low post.

All this hinges on very quick movements not allowing the defense a chance to trap.
