I hope Cuonzo Martin’s coaching style is fierier than his oratory. It’ll have to be for him to motivate inconsistent players like Scotty Hopson and Cameron Tatum and their ilk. While I have great hopes for our new coach, I just was not inspired by his press conference (unlike Bruce Pearl’s introductory speech). At this point, I can’t help but feel that he’s going to turn out to be nothing more than a caretaker coach, i.e. one who will manage to keep the program’s head above water yet find it difficult to impossible to take us to the heights we got used to under Bruce Pearl’s guidance. As much as I’d like to, I just don’t envision Martin keeping pace with the likes of Calipari, Donovan, and Stallings. I expect to remain underwhelmed until I see reason to feel otherwise. Actions, and results, speak louder than words. In the meantime, I’ll be anticipating yet another coaching search a few years down the road.

Having said that, I understand the difficulty of luring a high-profile coach to a university facing impending sanctions from the ncaa. Even the most stalwart, self-confident coaching phenomenon might find himself intimidated by that sort of scenario. In Cuonzo’s favor, at least he’s not cowed by the ncaa and their hammer of doom. I hope he puts the lie to my pessimism and soon becomes My Favorite Martin.

Your post seems fairly contradictory, since you seem to be judging him by his "words" in the introductory press conference.

You don't have to be loud and outspoken to be a successful & motivating coach. He seemed straightforward and genuine in his speech, and I like that. Just my .02 cents.

He says the right things. It’s just that his style is more subdued than other coaches we’ve come to know and love at UT.

He's not going to win the press conference, nor will he have the personality of Bruce Pearl. He reminds me of Saban. It's just him, the coaches, players, and athletic department, and that's all he cares about.

What you think about what he did at Missouri State?

I admire him for the turn-around he achieved at MO State. I think that's why most fans see a lot of potential in our new coach. But, he didn't have to compete with the likes of KY, FL, Vandy and the upstarts from the SEC West at his former job. I think his success at UT will depend largely on the quality and coachability of the players he's able to bring on board. His past success indicates that he may actually be a pretty good motivator. Only time will tell if he can recruit, coach, and motivate at the SEC level.

By the way: Ray Walston has always been one of my favorite actors.

I could care less if he has Phil Fulmer's demeanor on the bench and is boring as hell in press conferences, if he puts hardware in the trophy case.
