I'll start off with saying that I worked security from Tuesday to Saturday working a gate for one of the camping parks. There were plenty of interesting folks coming in there but the most fun I had during that span was on Saturday watching people walk to the Nationwide race under their own power & then walking being carried back to their site. One drunk guy actually came up to our post & started working with us. That was just great watching him. There were a lot of great sights but I don't have time to go into detail.
So, on to the race.
I got to sit in the infield, at the backstretch next to turn 3.
I was amazed at the place in every way. It was like a city inside those 2.5 miles.
Since I'm a Gordon fan I kind of wanted to leave after the wreck 8 laps in. Seeing him out there later being lapped & driving a dune buggy made me lose some interest. The Talladega airport is 100 yards from the track & not 10 minutes after the first wreck there were private planes taking off. It was the drivers that got knocked out.
I barely saw the first wreck but with 9 laps to go I found out why everyone goes to these races.
They wrecked directly in front of me. It made my day. I walked over to the fence & saw R. Gordon get out of his car & boy is that guy huge. I didn't even know there was a wreck on the last lap until we left & somebody told us about it & that some fans got injured.
After the day was done I'm sure I will do it again. Except Gordon better win.
