first off- michigan is returning some great underclassmen, and have another great class coming in,, second, northern texas has two great running backs, that alone makes me think they can bust the top 25 this season, and ole miss shouldnt be there, LOL

well im thinking michigan shouldnt be ahead of tennessee just on the fact that edwards and some of those corners are gone.

I don't know about top 25.

These are my predictions:

1. USC
2. Tennessee
3. Texas
4. Iowa
5. Virginia Tech
6. Ohio State
7. Nebraska*
8. Michigan
9. Florida
10. Miami

* Nebraska... So they screwed up their own coaching. Maybe they will turn it around. They certainly don't have a shortage of talent. Just using filler, basically

I am not trying to be a downer here but listing UT as preseason number 2 is a bit optimistic. Let's consider the facts; we have a lot of talent returning next season, and a great class of newcomers. On the other hand, our schedule next season is very difficult. Road games to UF and LSU are going to be a huge challenge to win both especially with the poor defense we played last season, If one were to think that one of these highly touted db's we signed will solve the problem at safety immediately then that is being very unlikely as well. It takes even the best players a few games to adjust. Don't get me wrong I am as big a homer as anyone but the likelihood of UT going undefeated and playing for the MNC next season is slim at best. Although I would love to see it, I am not getting my hopes up at this point.

Well, I am not getting my hopes up either. It is a tough road to the NC game. However, I think that out defense will be much better next year. I think that the difference in our secondary from this past season to the next will be night and day. Remember, Allen is coming back and Stewart will be back. Along with Hefney and Fellows and the rest of them that had valuable playing time this year. We have a stable of linebackers and our Dline will be much improved I think. I am going to go out on limb here and predict that we will have a top 10 defense next year.

I agree with all you said about the defense being better, BUT there is still the matter of UF and LSU on the road early in the season. Even with the improvement on Defense it is still likely that we will have at least one loss next season.

That is true and I realize that, but you never know. I am just excited about out potential next year and I hope that they take it one game at a time.

Tough schedules sometimes help focus a team better... and when talent like the Vols have becomes focused.... I think the Vols can definately make a run at the national championship in 2005. Definately better than slim! Remember the 1998 schedule was tough as well....

1998 Schedule
at #17 Syracuse*
#2 Florida*
Houston
at Auburn
at #7 Georgia*
Alabama*
at South Carolina
Ala.-Birmingham
#10 Arkansas*
Kentucky*
at Vanderbilt
vs #23 Miss State* (SECCG)
vs #2 Florida State* (BCSCG)

*8-of-13 opponents were bowl teams
6-of-13 were ranked at the time of the game, of which 5 were ranked at the conclusion of the season.

ALLVOL:

I agree with you the '98 team had a difficult road to the NC Game, and that team took it one game at a time while keeping their focus. But, the '98 team didn't play back to back road games in a row so early in the season. Remember LSU and UF have done as well if not better than most teams in the nation in the last 2-3 years in recruiting, both have out recruited the Vols. I expect both teams to be very strong, and a big challenge next season.

I do think the Vols can win both games, but to expect them to win both against two potentially top ten opponents is asking a lot. I hope the Vols pull it off, and if they do they could very well run the table if they start 3-0. Just my 2 cents.

I would say that opening the season with a new quarterback on the road at Syracuse against Donovan McNabb as quarterback and then turning around and playing a team that's beaten you 5 straight times in Florida .... was considerably tougher than it will be playing 2 teams with new coaches, Florida and LSU, back-to-back. Florida is now coming off 3-straight 5-loss seasons. The mystique has gone from the 'swamp', having lost 7 games there in the last 3 seasons. And, the Vols have won 2-in-a-row at the 'swamp'. Also, this time around the Vols get to play UAB first before playing Fla and LSU, whereas in '98 they had to open with 2 tough opponents.

Also, Florida and LSU may be ranked top 10 in the preseason.... but mark it down -- neither will be ranked anywhere near the top ten by year's end.

You honestly think this is how the rankings will be in 2005? Tennessee will be ranked Top Ten in pre season polls by anyone with common sense. My opinion only.

USC is undisputed the rest are mediocre.

But Georgia and Miami I have questions about.

texas at 6! tennessee no where to be found in the top ten! that would be very interesting. i think some one would have alot of explaining to do.

LSU has as many question marks as we do. Defensive secondary blew a sure win in the bowl with only 14 seconds left because they didn't read the receivers. You have 3 wide outs on one side. 3 covers on them. Dropped off the line in one on one, but the middle pulled up like he was going to get deep zone help. How were the inside and outside covers going to pull off their 2 receivers who were also on the fly pattern running 3 parallel routes. They should have recognized to go 3 deep cover one on one. Qb hits the open receiver in the middle route. That was after 3 other blown covereages that got them that far down field. all under 1:30. Game over. LSU QB situation is a big question mark. With the local kid going to Texas and Russell not really showing any real development this year like Ainge. Russell had ample playing time, but never commanded the role. New coach has a lot of teaching to do. I don't see LSU as a real threat until 2006. Not to be overlooked as a patsy, but a solid performance by any top team in the conference will shut them down. Especially, strong passing teams. Leak has not lived up to his billing yet. He's been sporadic. Even just a sophomore, he should have showed better this year. That makes him vulnerable again this year, but also dangerous as he has come to the time as a junior to prove his hype. Riggs will come into his own this spring and carry the load. He would have done more this year if they hadn't yielded to Houston's senior staus as much. He will only be on the sideline to catch a breather. Whoever starts at QB this year will start the rest of their career because Riggs will give them chance to look good.

True, Iowa racked up big on the verbals. Especially, at the AA game. If they get them all on paper and enrolled, could be a Big 10 title year.
